During a unit, students videoconference (Skype, FaceTime, etc.) with others around the world. In the example, students read a story and had a videoconference with students in the same grade, but who lived in a location similar to that of the one described in the book. This helped the students connect to the story on a deeper level and build their communication skills.

Blogging allows students to contribute to Digital Learning Communities and collaborate with others on a global scale. In this way, it is similar to videoconferencing, but it is via text instead of video. Students can post reflections, creations, and questions on a blog. Their peers (both in the same classroom and throughout the world) are then free to carry on the discussion. This improves collaboration and communication skills among students.
