When assessments are not fair, why should students trust anything you have to say in class. Why would they be motivated if they feel doomed to fail. We can greatly damage our students relationships with us and learning with unfair assessments. I will use the standards, my fellow educators, and unbiased rubrics to create reliable and valid assessments. I think students perceive assessments as fair when every student has been adequately prepared by the instruction and when everyone has the chance to take the test in the way they can succeed the most.

Fairness in assessment can impact student motivation because if an assessment is unfair, a student will go into any further assessments feeling anxious and unmotivated because they feel that they will be destined to fail. When an assessment is fair, students will know that the score they get is a direct reflection of the learning that took place.

Strategies that I can use to ensure reliability and validity in my own assessments are making strong, well-designed rubrics for each assessment, and I can also use advice or help from my coworkers.

I believe that students perceive fairness as each individually receiving the same amount and quality instruction and being given the same tools for assessment.

Fairness in assessments can impact student motivation and trust in a positive or negative way. It is important to make sure that there is fairness in assessments so that all students are given an equal opportunity for success. If the assessments are not held to a fairness standard some students may not be given the same opportunity as the rest. A strategy that can help ensure reliability and validity in assessments is to make sure that they align with the learning targets presented at the beginning of the lesson. We set students up for success when we make sure we keep those targets clear and at the forefront. It's difficult for me to know how students perceive fairness in assessments, however I do know that as a student myself, and am in my third year as a behavior Coach, I am becoming much more aware of how I perceive things such as fairness, validity, and reliability. As a future educator I am so grateful to have learned about the pillars of assessment so that I can apply that knowledge in just a few short years, so that my students will have the best opportunities for success!

If students feel like the assignment is fair they are more likely to succeed, and not be confused. If students understand what they are doing they are more likely to feel confident in their work. If it is unfair then why are you teaching them that information. They will not listen, and will not learning to what you are trying to teach them. Ensuring reliability is making strong, and well rounded assessments. along with this have a good rubric to go along with it. This will keep yourself in line, and see where you are at with something. I think that the way students perceive fairness in assessments is based off how much they have learned, and the tools given to them before, and during the assessment.

If students are being asked things that they don't know the answer to, they are going to be discouraged.

To make sure assessments are reliable and valid, you need to make sure you are teaching the exact content that is on the test. You can give the same test more than once and compare student scores to make sure it was reliable.

Students perceive fairness in assessments based on their knowledge or how they feel about the test.

Fairness impacts student motivation to learn in a massive way. If an assessment test students on the wrong material or is improperly written, students will feel that the teacher is against their advancement and learning. This creates a "you" vs "me" mentality when it comes to the classroom. This can not only affect the student's grades negatively but also destroy classroom rapport. I know I have been in classrooms where this was the case with the professor and every student hated to be in class and never did the homework. This is no way to learn.

I can discuss and compare assessments with other teachers in my content area and grade level. I can also use backwards design to ensure that the assessments align properly with the goals I assigned.

Students often perceive fairness as everyone being handed the same exact assessment. This is not actually fair to all students, particularly not to students with learning difficulties. Sometimes, students see fairness as whether they were adequately prepared for the assessment. If they were not, they can blame their performance and knowledge on the teacher and assessment instead.

Fairness impacts the effort given in an assessment and their want to complete the work. If a student feels that the assessment measured information that was not taught in class, they are not going to feel the need or want to complete the assessment or try on it at all. They feel the assessment is already setting them up to fail, so why try at all.

To ensure the three pillars are met, I need to compare the questions to covered content, standards, and goals. I need to make sure they align with standards of the current lesson and the content covered in class. I will also need to talk with peers to determine if the test is reliable enough to use in my classroom, comparing the assessments with other teachers in my grade is the way to determine if the assessment accurately represented the learning happening in our classrooms.

Students take all sorts of things into account when talking about fairness, not only that the information on the assessment is fair, but that every student got a fair opportunity to take this assessment with the same amount of knowledge.

Fairness in assessment plays a crucial role in student motivation and trust. When students believe that assessments are fair, they are more likely to engage in the learning process and feel confident in their abilities. This sense of fairness fosters a positive relationship between students and educators, as students trust that their efforts will be recognized and rewarded appropriately. Conversely, perceived unfairness can lead to frustration, disengagement, and a lack of motivation, which can negatively impact their academic performance.

To ensure reliability and validity in assessments, several strategies can be employed:

1. Clearly Defined Criteria: Establishing explicit rubrics and grading criteria helps students understand what is expected of them, thus promoting transparency and fairness.

2. Diverse Assessment Methods: Utilizing a variety of assessment formats (e.g., projects, presentations, quizzes, and peer assessments) accommodates different learning styles and provides a more comprehensive evaluation of student understanding.

3. Regular Calibration: Engaging in discussions with colleagues to review and discuss assessments helps ensure that grading is consistent and aligned with the intended learning outcomes.

4. Feedback Mechanisms: Providing timely and constructive feedback not only helps students improve but also reinforces the notion that assessments are based on their abilities rather than arbitrary measures.

As for how students perceive fairness in assessments, it often hinges on their experiences and the context in which assessments are conducted. Students are likely to view assessments as fair when they think that:

Everyone is held to the same standards: If they see that all students are treated equally regarding assessment criteria and grading practices, they tend to feel that the process is fair.

Assessments are aligned with instruction: When what is assessed reflects what was taught, students are more likely to believe that the assessments are a true measure of their learning.

They receive opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge: Students appreciate assessments that allow them to showcase their understanding in various ways, adding to their sense of fairness.
