To start off this unit, I had a time to re-design my POD from the previous unit.
In unit 7, I defined my position as an illustrator as 'an author who explores the concept of activist, educator and investigator within the context of illustration'. Instead of developing works from a single POD, I tried to communicate with the audience and delivered the message I wanted to convey by utilizing the 'obligations and responsibilities as a creator' required by all the PODs.

I reinterpreted this concept by linking each PODs to my body parts:

"If my body is an author, the creator, my eyes are activists (witnessing social/political issues), my fingers are investigators (experimenting to find an appropriate way of representing certain issues), and my mouth is an educator (teaching people the importance of knowing certain matter)."

Using the following idea as the base, I started to explore my role as an illustrator when visualizing the social/political issues of 'Japanese military sex slaves' (my biggest interest).

3. Dissecting my curiosity

^{19/04/21 MON}I started reading a book called ' Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel's classroom' by Ariel Burger. Elie Wiesel, a holocaust Survivor, is a Nobel laureate and activist. However, he defined himself as primarily and most devotedly a teacher. This book is based on his conversations and discussions with students from all over the world every Wednesday at Boston University. In this session, Elie Wiesel told his students that listening to someone's 'memories' with human affection is a weapon that can overcome an era of violence, oppression, discrimination and exclusion. He encouraged his students to question, empathically listen, self examine, identify moral complexities, fight hatred, embrace memory, build bridges of sympathy, resolve human suffering anywhere in the world and become ethically sensitive and responsible people.

I believed that reading this book would remind me of the reason why I was so interested in delivering victim's memory to raise awareness on certain social/political issues. Also, I felt like He was standing up for all the positions; the victim, the witness, the deliverer and therefore an activist (able to see different attitude required by each positions). It would definitely guide me through this project.

'Human right illustrator'

provide a link between my work and the audience? How can the audience find themselves from my work? How can I make them to feel a sense of 'responsibility' from my work?
create works that acts like a mirror, allowing the audience to project themselves into the case to find their position as the 'Witness'
To make the purpose of being created feel more important than the details of the case.
To create not only people who were already interested in child abuse, but also people who were not interested in it but became interested in it through my work.
Unlike telling people only the stories they want to hear or bringing out the original fear, I am giving people the stories they need to hear, even if it is painful to hear. Placing lamp next to a lamp.

Why Isn't 'Activist' my Point of Departure?

Even-though the biggest frame of my works surrounds my duty as an activist, I still think author is my 'point of departure':

The reason I sense, and closely look into certain issues = my eager to create a piece of work for those who needs it. Using my work/creativity as a tool to communicate with the audience and resolves certain problems. Suggesting creative response to the audience = why I am interested in those topic.

However, I sense the 'social/problem issues' FIRST. Doesn't that mean Activist is my point of departure?

The human eye is the first element of a sensory system. Just like how I made a link between my eyes and role as an activist, I sense the problem and willing to develop a work about it.

The role as an author begins and completes my journey as an illustrator.

I start and end my departure as an author, but during this process, I utilize the 'obligations and responsibilities as a creator' required by all the PODs to communicate with my audience.

Overall, I was satisfied with the final outcome of my last unit's project. However, I could find some vague/obscure ideas that needed further developments.

REFLECTION (Week 1)

After ending unit 7, I some how felt uncomfortable defining my point of departure as 'an author who explores the concept of activist, educator and investigator within the context of illustration'.

I thought about this for a quite long time, wondering why I am feeling such emotions. During this process, I realized that the uncomfortable feeling arose from the vagueness of my POD. Even though the project clearly asked me for my 'POINT OF DEPARTURE', I felt like I answered my position as an illustration in general (never answered where my role as an illustrator begins).

Therefore, I decided to use the first week of unit 8 to reflect on my true self as an illustrator, and I was able to clarify my position. This process really enabled me to revalue my responsibility as a creator.

REFLECTION (Week 22)

While other students focused on their practical practices, I spent my whole week exploring my responsibility/duty as an illustrator. Perhaps I have overdone this process. I could have jumped into practical practices right away and spend more time experimenting with various materials and working methods. Then, Why have I spent so long to self observe my position as an illustrator?

It was not because I am a narcissist or self-lover, but because I am dealing with such a heavy topic to create a work upon. If I do not have a strong voice on my subject of matter due to the lack of understanding on my position in 'disseminating child abuse', how can I expect my audience to make a voice for the abused children? It is frustrating that only certain groups of people eventually become interested in abused children. What's the difference between people who know this case and don't feel responsible and people who act responsibly?

However, I might have to stop questioning myself and quickly move on to material experimentation. I might get answers to my curiosity while experimenting various working methods. I do no think I can create a piece that solves following problem by just sitting down doing researches and writing down questions with no answers.

UNIT 7:

Wrong understanding of the 'audience'. I initially said my audience is everyone, but my choice of delivery was not suitable fore 'everyone'. Instead it was for 'young children who speaks English'.
Making actual changes in the world = activist
Let's be wise about what you want to do about topical issues. What about it triggers 'anger' or 'motivation' beyond its moral value? What voice or movement do you want to add beyond what already exists?

UNIT 8:

Strengthen your ability in approaching matters with a visual communicator's perspective. Such as when you encounter someone else's work, 'what design improvement do you see?'
We talked about 'reactive' media culture in S.Korea. Not many things get solved beyond people get aggravated about the topic. On that note, let's look at your practice nature. You are dealing with topical issues from one to the other. What do you really want to tackle in this? Further, what kind of illustrator do you see yourself dedicating your practice to?

^16/04/21Using my 'Unit: 7 overviewed evaluation' as the guidance, I developed a' Questioning exercise', which I found it very useful to identify my needs and solutions. Since English is my third language (1st Lang: Korean, 2nd Lang: Vietnamese), I often find myself overloaded with too many information/ideas on certain topic with all different languages. To solve this problem, I conducted an exercise for myself, instantly writing down any questions that came across my mind (which becomes very helpful knowledge once they are answered). It is a creative, but effective method of 'developing/reflecting on an idea'.^-->This choice of method was selected after self-leading three unit projects during my 2nd year.

Questions:

My focus on the last project was to raise awareness on the topic of 'Military sex slaves' by visualizing the victim's 'memory'.

Q. Biggest question, Why am I so obsessed with delivering ‘memories’ to resolve social/political issues anyway?

I definitely could have just revealed problems related to Japanese military sex slaves, delivering factual information about their existence to the audience with strong visual elements.

Q. But why was the victim's 'Memory' specifically chosen to deliver my message? I also incorporated my own memory on the issue to raise awareness on the human rights issues of Sexual slavery victims that are newly raised to this day. WHY?

However, there was a huge risk of delivering someone else's 'memory' --> This is because I have used 'words' & 'writings' as tools to deliver their history
--> Words are so easy to manipulate and therefore, my choice of words may have mis-delivered their memories..

Q. Then, How can I deliver the ignored voice of the victims to the audience, instead of using words?

Through last unit, I realized that I should resolve/disseminate fundamental problems of certain political/social issues (not to be used as a 'therapy + comforting' purpose). As an illustrator, I have the responsibility to utilize my style to become a storyteller. I have the duty to pass on, not to hang on.

Q. However, Does this mean I will always need to seek for a 'big social/political issues?
Q. What am I really interested in as an illustrator? Would this answer the question above?

^{23/04/21 FRI}Before reading this book, I was somewhat frustrated with myself, consistently insisting to story-tell the victims's memory on their tragedy for their justice.
However, reading this book made me to feel like I am fulfilling the missing spots with rich knowledges. It really helped me to back up my ideas on raising awareness of certain social/political issues through the 'memory'. Also, I was able to once again remind myself with the duty I have as a visual communicator.

During this process, I felt like I could answer some of the questions that I wrote down during 'Questioning Exercise'.

Q. I definitely could have just revealed problems related to Japanese military sex slaves, delivering factual information about their existence to the audience with strong visual elements. But why was the victim's 'Memory' specifically chosen to deliver my message? Also, I incorporated my own memory on the issue to raise awareness on the human rights issues of Sexual slavery victims that are newly raised to this day.

A: If there is a solution to the problems facing humankind today, there must be a clear education at its core. Despite the good teachings, our society ignores to solve social / political problems because due to the difficulty of understanding our position in the case. I think providing information purely technically can never help to prevent another tragedy. The audiences need to understand the victim's "memory" and find/project themselves in it. Only through such discoveries can it cause a changes in moral attitude.

However, it is never enough to just know that "the victim exists". The audiences are required to personally ponder what the victim has experienced, and I, 'a human right illustrator', am responsible to create works that acts like a mirror, allowing the audience to project themselves into the case to find their position as the 'Witness'. The audience should be able to feel the same emotion for the "victims" who appeared in my work and the actual victims in our real life. --> If there are more people who feel responsible every time they see the victims in real life after seeing my work, and this leads to a small change in the daily lives of the victims and witnesses, wouldn't that be my 'MISSION CLEARED' as an illustrator?

Memory contributes greatly to the process of changing knowledge into a blessing and an act of sympathizing minorities. Elie Wiesel could only possible to realize this understanding through various experimentations, discussions (with his students), contemplation. I thought his process of finding significant functionality of 'memory' was similar to the process in which I, as an illustrator, gradually identified the importance of "memory" by researching various delivery method.

During my 2nd year of illustration, I have conducted 3 projects which used 'memories' in various forms to help those are suffering from social/political issues. I did not realize this until today (I was just checking if any other project aims consists the topic of 'memory').

In Unit 5, I conducted two projects with health & wealth as the theme. Both project aimed to create a product for children who were suffering from mental health issues during the Covid-19 Lockdown by evoking their happy memories before the corona outbreak (using nostalgic smell). At this time, I have done this to tell the victims that 'the solution to their struggle is within themselves, in their memory'. However, as the time passed, I realized that 'consoling' is not effective in resolving their actual problems, but instead I need to 'disseminate' their struggles to the public (Realized the Importance of 'Raising awareness, disseminating their struggles).

^{24/04/21 SAT}Using my point of interest as the guidance, I started to consider possible 'theme' for this unit's. Continuing from the last unit, I looked into different social/political issues related to the forms of abuse, social minorities group (Focusing on the voices that are not heard).
- Child abuse
- Women/dating violence
- Asian hate abuse/violence

However, out of all these victims, I decided to develop my project on child abuse cases in South Korea. Child abuse violates a child's basic right to live a human life and further threatens his or her survival. In order to prevent damage caused by child abuse, policy efforts and attention will be needed to prevent the occurrence of child abuse, along with the spread of social awareness of the seriousness of child abuse.

Child abuse in South Korea:

- Korean people avoid to be engage in 'family issues' (80.9% happens in family)
- Child abuse = The belief that 'I will teach you my way because you are my child'.
- Policy efforts and attention will be needed to prevent the occurrence of child abuse, along with the spread of social awareness of the seriousness of child abuse.
- Children who are being domestic violence are hard to report because of their fear.
- The perpetrator who is released on charges of impunity. Also, if parents deny it, they send the child back home.

The Victim's voice: (victims who became an adult)

- We need someone who actually trust our words '말을 믿어줄 사람이 필요해요'.
- We need a place where we actually feel relaxed '마음편히 쉴 곳 하나 있는게 얼마나 중요한지'
- We have less self-respect, low self-esteem.
- All though we are all grown as adults, we can not get over those memories.
- People prejudge us. --> we are not violent

What is needed?

- 'Jungin we are sorry' goods: obsessed with the format itself and lost what we really need to convey
- Really no visual references.
- no voice heard from children --> They can not tell anyone else about what they are going through because their parent force them not to speak about it.
- Adult reproaches an adult.
- "Protect us till the end" , "Do not send us back home"
- "My parents look gentle and friendly, but they abuse me." , "Trust Me. Not them."

Then what should I create as an illustrator to help the audience from finding themselves from the case?

- A work in which the audience can look at the picture and become a witness to the incident and ask themselves moral questions.
- A work that helps you to think about what responsibilities you should have for a particular incident and victim.
- a piece that helps the audience take someone else's memories easily but deeply.

Few days before the workshop, I had a small walk around my neighborhood to identify iconic features of my community. Also, I took down notes on the conversation between the customers from my part time job.

Biggest interest of my neighborhoods:

My house is located on the way up to the mountain. Easy to spot Korean 'Hiking Outfit' from the hikers.
All the restaurants says that they are 'the last Kimbap place' --> implying that they are the last and only restaurant to buy kimbap before going up to the mountain.
All the hikers show off their fancy outfits and hiking equipments
Hikers plan the whole day like a tour. Buy kimbap before they hike, eat kimbap during they hike, scream 'YAHO!' on the peak of the mountain and eat Korean pancake after they hike.

Lessons Learned:

I can represent 'small' voice as well.
I do not always have to look for such a big social/political issues to become a 'human right illustrator'.
The voice I want represent can be my neighborhood, who are suffering from hikers climbing up the traffic road just like a mountain. I can make a piece of work that represents voice of my neighbors 'HIKING STARTS UP ON THE MOUNTAIN'.

Learning through workshops

Based on the comments I received from my 'feedback session' (lack of material experiments), I decided to take all the POD workshops. This was done in order to experiment and see which working method is most effective in delivering abused children's memory.

Theme, Character and Setting:

S: A long-lost family member turns up in the middle of the night.

Story I made using the prompt:

"Late night on a lonely moor, a man stands right in-front of the door. A long-lost family runs towards the moor, then a man locks the door."

After creating 6 panels comics, I was then assigned to put these images into 3 panels. In order to deliver a story more effectively, I have extended each panels vertically.

Lessons Learned:

With this assignment, I was able to think about the strength of utilizing 'composition' when visualizing a story.

During this workshop, I was given a task to generate a short comic by using the 'Prompt Generator'. I have prepared my pencil and grey marker to quickly draw short comic within 10 minutes.

In this workshop, I was given a task to select 5 objects in total to draw: 1 object from my bedroom, 1 object from my bathroom, 1 object that is broken but I have not thrown away, 1 object that I have an affection to and 1 object from my kitchen. The choice of material was strictly restricted to pencil and paper, and a short presentation on 'Scientific illustration and its drawing requirements' were provided as guidance for sketches.

Lessons Learned:

Big difference between sketching with/without visual evidence
Sketching without the visual information --> forget what it was

--> It is very important to provide strong/persuasive visual images for the audience.

Just like drawing after seeing the case VS drawing after listening what the case was like (no visual references)

--> In the point of the witness: The weight of responsibility an audience feels after seeing my visual record of abused children's memory, and the weight of responsibility an audience feels after just listening what victims went. through without a visual reference --> Huge difference.

I was fascinated with how 'hiking' is like a whole different concept/culture for Korean people. Step 1, wear a fancy hiking outfits. Step 2, equip a cane the 'deluxe'. Step 3, stop by one of the 'last kimbap place' and finally step 4, scream 'YAHO~' on the top of the mountain. I have drawn this in a storytelling illustration form to show the unique culture in Korea.

Whether to open or not, a person standing in front of the door has the power to decide. Then I started to think, 'If the person decided to open the door, what made them to come up with that decision? maybe an appearance of a door evoked his/her curiosity. If I said my work = door, what kind of access am I providing to the opener?
Maybe my work is the door, persuading the audience (who had little to no knowledge on story of certain victims) to access the memory/history of victims.

I was very excited for this workshop because the given brief interestingly explained various interpretation of visualizing a 'door'. The workshop began with a short presentation on 'metaphorical representation of door'. Rain Wu showed us how other artists have identified a 'door' and use it as a form to deliver their message.

The feedback session was very helpful (It was very much like an eye-opening experience). However, some of the questions I received from my tutor have really questioned my ability as an 'Author, who utilize the 'obligations and responsibilities as a creator' required by all the PODs to communicate with my audience'. When I told my tutor that I have been interested in visualizing the memory of physically/psychologically abused children to raise awareness on 'child abuse', she then asked if my action actually contributes in 'making changes'.

Jin: 'Visualizing the memory of children who are abused by their parents. No voice can be heard from the children and therefore I want to make voices for them to raise awareness.'

Jayoon: 'Does that actually help in solving the 'child abuse issues? Yes, you are being one part of movement for change, however your work might not be very significant factor that SOLVES the issue. Think about your role as an activist. 'Japanese military sexual slavery' victims are fighting back for their rights for the past 76 years. How can you actually participate in making changes?

After listening to her, I felt like I was doing it all wrong. I felt like I was just being persistent to deliver the victim's 'memory' because the book 'Witness' left such a strong messages to me. I thought I should no longer visualize 'memories' but instead, create something more deliberate --> 'works that actually contributes in changing laws related to child abuse'. However, at the same time, I did not want to do this. I had a huge controversy going around my head. Therefore, I decided to ask myself few more questions.

Q. Does any other project of mine consists the topic of delivering 'memory'? If so, why is this so crucial to me?

Q. Why am I not creating piece of work that tackles certain issue with simplified but strong images?

I can definitely create a work that urge Korean government to create proper Child Abuse/Domestic Violence policy (It is most effective, deliberate and fast solution I can suggest). However, rather than making a work that directly solves the underlying problem of such issue, I want to make a work that allows the victim of the incident, the person who makes the work, and the audience who saw my work to participate in preventing the same history from being repeated.
This delivery method would take long time to make actual changes in our community, which means my work can not deliberately solve the child abuse problems at once. However, although, It takes time, changes are accumulating. Same history may repeat, but when they repeat, refinement/improvement would repeat as well. If I constantly create works that voices the abused children's memory, those victims would know there is someone who feels a strong responsibility in making everyone the 'witness'.

This might be the exact reason why I stated that my point of departure is an Author.

Before Unit 7: 'the solution to their struggle is within themselves, in their memory' --> Helping the victims to solve the problem they have by using their own 'material', the memory of the happy moment --> Therefore, consoling them with my work.

During Unit 7: Realized that 'Dissemination' is more important than 'consolation' --> Became the voice of the victims to deliver their memory to the audience --> Understood the importance of 'Raising Awareness'

After Unit 7, now: Started to think deeper about the position of 'audiences' in my work --> it is never enough to just know that "the victim exist" --> Turning the 'audience' to the witness' --> Begans to ask questions to 'potential witnesses' who have to contemplate the problems the victims are facing TOGETHER.

Perhaps Unit 7 was the turning point of my life as an illustration student. Until now, I have always focused on representing my victims of interest through my work, but I have never really thought deeply about the impact my work has on the society in which I live. However, after unit 7, I Began to ask questions to 'potential witnesses' who have to contemplate the problems the victims are facing TOGETHER (Audiences should personally thinking about the victim's experience, finding their position In the victim's memory).

What I (author who utilize the 'obligations and responsibilities as a creator' required by all the PODs) can do for the victim is to make a work with a deep understanding of the history that his/her memory convey.
What the audience can do is to become witnesses of the incident, reflect on their moral attitudes, understand the pain the victims suffer and make/support small-big moral changes within our society.

I want my work to act like a mirror, allowing the audience to project themselves into the case to find their position as the 'Witness'. My work should motivate the 'witnesses' to throw moral questions and help them think about the specific social/political issues and what responsibility to feel for the victims of the issues. Unlike telling people only the stories they want to hear or bringing out the original fear, I am giving people the stories they need to hear, even if it is painful to hear.

I am suggesting another method of dealing with the pain for the victims (Providing a chance for the victims to deal with their memory/pain --> Passing on their memory can solve someone else's problem.

I first drew the object with the objects in front of me.
I then picked three of the objects and drew them with details.
Finally, I removed the objects and drew them without a visual reference (I drew only what I can remember)

Once the visual reference was gone, it was actually a lot harder for me to draw the objects.

Although, I drew an amulet in my 2nd detailed drawing task, I could not think to draw it for my 3rd quick drawing without a visual reference (I could only remember spoon, tooth path and ink case).

REFLECTION (Week 23+24)

Each workshops suggested diverse delivery method for me to utilize and develop my project on abused children. The 'workshop 2: write good stories ; make them look great' provided very useful knowledges for me to understand what kind of visual elements support the delivery of message (ex. the impact of composition and layout on the delivery).

However, unlike I intended, I felt like I have not experimented with various materials and working methods to create a work for each workshops. My intention of taking all the workshops was to explore various materials and find out what works the best. I was a little frustrated with myself since I have not achieved what I was willing to conduct. Because I was so concerned about the final outcome of the workshops, I always took advantage of using iPad or pencil drawing to create a response for each agenda (since each workshops give 30-40 minutes to create a work). As an illustrator with very slow hand, I had so much pressure to create 'a complete, good looking' work within the restricted time. When I reflect back on my behavior, I am not very happy with myself who cares so much about the visual aspect of the work instead of its meaning.

Also, my experience from the last year practice has stopped me from moving on to the material exploration and experimentations. However, I do realize that I don't need to take in all the advices from the tutors. I need to have the power to pursue my beliefs. I should be more independent and confident with my own work.

Learning from this experience, I will definitely try something more experimental for the final outcome.

In this session, we focused on which visual/written material differeciates 'Poetics' and 'Hermeneutics'. We discussed on the functionality of 'poetics' and evaluated what text/image makes the audience to truly accept the work as it is (form of the work and what the form does), instead of analyzing author's interpretation. Jack and the group looked at some of works that have used this concept as the theme and then listed down the similarity between each works to create 'principles of design systems'.

I found the feedback session very helpful as it allowed me to think deeper about my audience and their community. Amazing references were recommended for me to have a look and be inspired. Some of the feedbacks really helped me to develop my ideas. Using these feedbacks, I have refined my idea for the final outcome of this unit.

Each boxes were positioned on a specific spot to create a sense of rules/constraints. Simplifying the final outcome definitely eased emotional burden/pressure for me to create 2 different outcomes within the short amount of time. Before thinking of an alternative, I constantly found myself getting lost in track with my own idea. Through this idea, I have learned that more ideas do not mean better outcome (I have learned how to remove ideas that disturbs the delivery of message).

While I was developing the content for the zine, I started to worry about the power of delivery without the 'text' explaining each images. At least zine consists of a storyline that helps the audience to understand the situation, but the 'sticker' will need to persuade the audience with one single image.

However, which AUDIENCE? I talked about two different community; Adults in South Korea and United Kingdom. If I do include the text, explaining the scene, what kind of language should I be speaking? English is not a first language for Koreans, and Korean is not a first language for English.

Solution:
I decided to ask the necessarily of 'text' in both zine and sticker to the peers during the group discussion on 18/05/21. In order to do this, I will need to complete at least 2 pages for the zine and bring them to the meeting. I will extract the images from the zine to create stickers.

The advices and suggestions from the mixed group peers and Geoff was very helpful for me to answer the questions I had for my targeted audience.

After the group Crit/feedback session, I decided to slightly alter some of my ideas for the final outcomes:

1. Not adapting the functionality of 'Oulipo's poetry book' in to my zine.
But instead, I wanted to make a normal zine that still acts like a door for the audience to enter the memory of abused children. Also, I wanted to maintain the layout of placing two Images next to each other (image 1. abused/neglected children. Image 2. The consequences of ignoring their struggles)

2. The community and audience of this project is not restricted to human society in South Korea, but any adults in general who would become a 'witness' of domestic violence on children through my work. I would only use 'visual language' to deliver the message (in this way, both audience can embrace the message). Both without 'text' for wider range of audience.

3. I would have 2 final outcome. one zine in and one sticker pack. I still wanted to continue with my original idea of using 'stickers' as a form to spread.

I then rewrote a summary of 'developed ideas' to clarify my final goal of this unit.

Great use of 'padlock' as a metaphorical device to reveal affective attitude change of domestically abused children.
Including text is better. Otherwise, It would be difficult for the audience to embrace the message.
However, Instead of directly writing 'neglected' under the image of 'neglected child' to describe their pain, what can you do to imply what they are going through? (How can I make the audience to think deeper about the those children?) Also, abused children do not always have to be In the 'crouching poses'
Your work is a bit mathematical (you know exactly what to do and you do it. Lack of commitment on 'exploring') --> Be MORE EXPERIMENTAL!!!

My Question on 4: I feel difficult to draw something out of certain style because I am dealing with such a heavy topic. I am not sure how to deliver this topic, without using metaphorical images.

Advice: Watch 'Life if beautiful', the method of delivering 'Nazi death camp' is beautifully done. Your visual language doe not need to be restricted.

The advice I would reflect on my work:

Not restricting my visual language.
Incorporating 'texts'. But I will need to think about what kind of language I would be using. Korean? English? or both?
Instead of using directive, simple words, How can I make the audience to think deeper about the those children?

Considering the comments from the feedback session, I decided to Incorporating 'texts' to both zine and sticker. However, considering the two different community that I am dealing with, I had to think about what kind of language I would be using (Korean? English? or both?)

Language: English
Reason: Zine can be made in a form of digital book (able to access online). Also, I can participate for art competition that subjects social/political (ex. Creative Conscience ). In this case, more audience in UK get to think deeply about rises in child abuse cases in UK after Covid outbreak.

Language: Korean
Reason: Since I am in South Korea right now, I can use the sticker as a form to spread (naturally raising awareness on the child abuse). I can also provide this to working organization in South Korea so that more people get to participate in spreading the sticker = more people participate in spreading the awareness.

Using the advice I received from the feedback session, I started to design 3 more pages for the zine. Instead of just using 'Metaphorical' method of delivery, I started to be more creative with visualizing the seriousness of neglecting the tragedy of domestically abused children. Also, I tried not to restrict myself from using various colours.

Using the researches I have conducted so far, I started to design the content of my zine. This series of work visualizes the potential long term effects of child abuse/neglect that extend to adult hood. I am thinking of creating 4 more pages, showing how the domestic violence on child leads to adverse outcomes in the victim's adulthood.

However, due to the heaviness of the topic that I am dealing with, I could not deliberately visualize what the abused children have experience (It may bring out the fear from the audience). To deliver the stories that the audiences need to hear, even if it is painful to hear, I decided to use 'metaphorical' images as the device to visualize the memory of the victims and the consequences of neglecting their struggles. For example, all the houses were locked up with padlock so child had to go back to the place where he/she got abused. When she/he grew up, it got locked emotionally.

Then what should I do?

Experimenting with glass decoration kit was very unique and interesting. I felt like this was first for me to move away from the tight plan I had for my project and explore various method of delivery. Learning from this experience, I will no longer be scared to experiment with various materials. I really liked how I am starting to form two different community in UK and South Korea. In this case, more people would be able to understand the seriousness of domestic abuse and sense some kind of responsibility as 'adults' to make changes for the children's future.

Balance between with and without the text

Some images do not incorporate 'text' since the power of delivery is stronger without them.
The font of each 'text' is written with a child's hand writing --> Persuading the audience as the victim
Positioning each stickers considering the colours and forms --> Stopping the stickers from disturbing each other.

Unlike the zine, I wanted the stickers to deliver two different message: 1. Witness what domestically abused children are experiencing / 2. Report to 112 (Korean police number) when they see abused children. Why? Compare to other countries, Korea has very low child abuse reporting rate.

Audience Participate to 'Spread'

I provided sticker packs to my friends, family and neighbours. They participated to spread the knowledge. I walked out the street and took pictures of my stickers that were put up by those who received the stickers from me. I felt like the audiences were forming a 'community' through my work. Few days later, I have went back to the place where each stickers were put up. Surprisingly, none of them were taken off.

I wanted to create a work that also allows the audience to participate in making a work for domestically abused children. In order to achiever this goal, I decided to create tracing drawing paper for the audiences to try making 'glass stickers' by themselves. I tried to simplify each drawings so that it is easier for the audiences to try out.

Since I am physically located in South Korea at the moment, I wanted create diverse outcomes that audiences can participate in raising awareness on child abuse.

Method of meeting my audience:
- Creating sticker as a form to spread: Sharing the stickers with my friends, family and neighbors. My friend shared the stickers with their friends and their friends also shared the stickers with their relatives. --> This perfectly met my goal: allows the victim of the incident, the person who makes the work, and the audience who saw my work to participate in preventing the same history from being repeated.

Unlike I intended, all the images were not linked to correct images. Also, the zine order of each images (including the cover and the back) was messed up.

This hugely affected the message I was trying to deliver. Although it was 'visually' fine as a final outcome, I still thought I should republish the zine (I want a product that convinces the audiences through the content not the visual aspects.
