One way I can think of challenging marginalization is to educate my peers. I found myself in a lot of leadership positions this school year, and there can be many ways we can implement learning about marginalization. As an ARC peer mentor, we could hold workshops to help people understand marginalization and how it connects to them. As a director and Head writer of this year's PCN, we can write in something about challenging marginalization, maybe not in a capitalist sense but in the idea of being excluded from participation.

Gender: Gender roles and cis-normativity placed onto people, determined by the cis-white dominant group. This can cause people who do not fit the binary established, that they aren't normal and need fixing.

Men are to think of their body as a tool to use to get what they want and women are to think of their bodies as a project they must work on to please others

Sexuality: Heteronormativity diminishes the identity of the LGBTQIA+ making them feel less than. It can even cause internalized homophobia or self-hate due to being alienated or witnessing treatment towards the LGBTQIA+

Ability: It is connected because disability and what is considered "good labor" is determined by Capitalists, who are the dominant group within capitalism. Some may develop the double consciousness and really believe that they can't work (maybe due to not being given opportunities) and stop trying.

Religion: In the U.S we are supposed to be accepting of all religions, but there are still certain stereotypes and biases towards certain religions. Because Christianity and Catholicism are the dominant group, there are more resources (Churches) for them to gather in. Other religions have less, creating this idea of who is more important. It can cause people to stop practicing their religion because there is a lack of a sense of community.

Some ways to get rid of cultural imperialism or double-consciousness would be to not let society define what or who something or someone has to be. Being able to define what a man or a woman is, for example, on your own terms should be more important than adopting the idea of the dominant group, because those adopted ideas benefit only the dominant group. Also questioning the norm and being curious as to why certain things are considered normal while others are not.

Society puts the blame on women, justifying the violence, and causing other women to fear the potential of sexual violence.

Sexuality: Violence on the LGBTIA+

Example: Acts of violence on a gay/trans person can cause the rest of the community to fear violence.

Cultural imperialism promotes violence as a social practice by causing victims of violence to adopt double consciousness and also blame themselves. It also causes society to share the same ideas and blame the victims of violence and not hold the attacker accountable. Cultural imperialism causes society to adopt the ideas of the dominant group so when the dominant group commits acts of violence, no one sees it as an issue. Cultural imperialism allows the dominant group to control what is normal, so if they normalize violence, so will the rest of society.
