A theme of this story is that people have to overcome fears to save people and become heroes. This is demonstrated when Frank faces his fears by swimming under burning oil in water to save a sailor named Patrick that would have otherwise died.

This song relates to the story because it is about being a hero, having hope, and putting your fears aside. This is exactly what Frank has to go through in the story which is why it reminded me of the story.

Quote

My favorite quote from this story comes on page 161. Once the USS Nevada appears, all the Japanese attackers start firing at it. Unfortunately for Frank and Stanley, they're small boat was right next to the battleship. They get away and then they see a young sailor in the water, surrounded by a ring of burning oil that keeps getting smaller. While Frank argues that they have to save him, he says "A true hero steps in when they see somebody getting hurt," (Gratz, 161), and then he dives under to swim under the oil and rescue the sailor. I really liked this quote because it's pretty much the whole theme of the story. It's about heroes being brave and overcoming their fears to help other people, which is crucial in a situation like the Pearl Harbor Attacks.

This was a phrase and quote from president Franklin Delano Roosevelt during WW2. Frank and Stanley (without knowing) make a comic book about a superhero named this, which is how they would like to stay in touch after the attack, since Frank is being sent to California to be safe and Stanley works for the VVV in Hawaii and has to face racism.

Although he had done nothing wrong and even was a hero during the attack, he still had to try to redeem himself for doing nothing wrong. This organization was mainly composed of Japanese Americans and the people would volunteer to do various tasks such as digging graves for the people who died during the attack.

The day after the Pearl Harbor Attacks, December 8th, 1941, president Franklin D. Roosevelt suggested to congress that the U.S. should declare war on Japan, which congress promptly unanimously voted to go through with the presidents suggestion. This ended the United States' "neutrality" in WWII and led to Japan's allies, Germany and Italy also declaring war on the U.S.
