Jack and Algernon are very rich gentlemen. Jack (also known by Algernon as Ernest) lives a respectable life in the country giving an example to his young pupil Cecily. Algernon lives in luxury in London and he created an imaginary disabled friend (who he calls Bunbury) whom he visits when there is a boring social engagement that he is expected to go to. Jack has also invented a character - a capricious younger brother called Ernest whom he uses as an excuse for going to London to have fun.

Jack wants to marry Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen, but Jack must first convince her mother, Lady Bracknell, of the respectability of his parents. But Jack, was abandoned in a handbag at Victoria station by his parents, so this is a very difficult task.

Algernon visits Jack’s house in the country and introduces himself to Cecily as Ernest, knowing that Cecily is already fascinated by tales of Ernest's evil personality. She falls in love with him and eventually they become engaged.

Shortly after, Jack arrives home announcing Ernest’s death. This initiates a series of absurd events. From Cecily and Gwendolen have a genteel fight over which of them has the right to marry Ernest; to Jack and Algernon competition to be baptized as Ernest.
