Native American women are more likely to be sexually assaulted than women of other races, and 22% of Native American Children often suffer levels of PTSD that is 3 times higher than the national rate and is equivalent to those found in war veterans. Furthermore, due to the fact that their languages and traditions are dying, Native American children do their best to keep it alive. But instead, their culture gets masked and they are often punished for practicing their religion.

An example would be what happened with the Carlisle Indian School, in 1879. The Carlisle was one amongst hundreds of boarding schools that attempted through multiple strategies to remove or assimilate Native Americans- specifically children. The boarding school banned children from speaking their language, using their names, and practicing their culture. Native American children's hair were cut short, their clothing was changed, and their names were disregarded. According to History.com, the children were also told that their culture was unimportant and that it was inferior than to the white peoples'. Although her partner was imprisoned and she received help from a Domestic Violence program, the trauma stayed with her for the rest of her life. The program leader, Gobert, states that "It's a norm here... People don't want to address it... even though almost every family on the reservation is affected by it..." Unfortunately, even if the abuser is trialed on reservation land, the survivors may not be protected outside of the tribal land.
