Police Detectives investigating crimes will tell you that witnesses can be mistaken and suspects can lie, but the evidence always tells the truth. People who work in law enforcement often rely on different types of evidence to convict criminals. One of the best kinds of evidence to gather during criminal cases is what is called ‘real’ or ‘physical’ evidence.

Physical evidence refers to any material object that is crucial in proving who committed a crime and how they did it. When a crime, such as murder, has been committed, law enforcers gather physical evidence to help attorneys prosecute criminals. A murder weapon would be a great example of physical evidence. Being able to produce the murder weapon in court during trial may help answer questions like who it belonged to or how it was used. It is more difficult to convict a criminal for a crime like murder without a murder weapon as evidence.

Law enforcers often say “the evidence will tell the story of how a crime was committed.” In Roald Dahl’s short story, “Lamb to the Slaughter,” a crime takes place where the evidence might not tell the entire story. With this in mind, consider the statement:

Even in moments of weakness we are still responsible for our actions.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain your perspective.
