A big part of learning a second language is learning about the culture of that language. This week we will take a look at a famous literary character from British culture.
Who is Sherlock Holmes?
Sherlock Holmes is a character from books written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Holmes became an icon of British culture and modern detective stories. Doyle introduced Holmes in 1887 in the short story “A Study in Scarlet” and went on to write at least 50 more stories featuring the detective, as well as The Hound of
the Baskervilles (1902) and several other novels. Doyle based his character on the personality of his former teacher in medical school, Dr. Joseph Bell of Edinburgh.
Sherlock Holmes is a detective who tries to find out who committed the crimes.
There is a monument in London dedicated to him. He has a sharp mind and solves
even the most difficult and strange mysteries. He works with his friend Dr Watson, a retired army officer. Sherlock Holmes is often dressed in a coat and cap, and carrying
a pipe and a magnifying glass. He lives at 221B Baker Street in London. Holmes’s opponent is the criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty.
- Adapted from Encyclopedia Britannica and Kiddle Encyclopedia

Now, read this article about your DNA, and answer the questions below.
Every year on April 25 since 2003, scientists, biologists, and geneticist come together to observe National
DNA Day, celebrating the discovery and research into DNA and the scientific advancements that helped make progress possible. This event is organized annually by the Human Genome Research in the United State.
The goal of National DNA Day is to offer students, teachers and the public an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the latest advances in genomic research and explore how those advances impact their lives. National DNA Day encourages people to learn more about the science of genetics and its continuous development. Here are some facts you never know about your DNA. We’re all 99.9 percent alike, it means we’re all more similar than we are different. Our DNA is responsible for happiness and sadness.

Read the text and answer the following questions.
Zeina and her young brother went with their father to buy some beautiful light cords to decorate their home for
Ramadan. When they arrived home, her brother wanted to turn the lights on but Zeina stopped him asserting
that this may cause him some harm. He wondered why, so Zeina used her laptop to search the net and give him
a good answer. Here is what she found:
Human beings are a good conductor of electricity which is why electricity flows easily through our body. Our
body is made up of 70% water and electricity is known to move quickly through the water. One more fact to
remember is that electricity will always try to find the easiest path to the earth or ground. Look at the points
below to keep your child safe.
Electricity safety rules for children when they are at home
• Never let them stick their fingers or any other object into the electrical outlets or allow them to light bulbs.
• You should never use any electrical appliance near the sink, bathtub or any other sources of water.
• Keep electrical cords away from sinks, bathtub or any other sources of water. Apart from causing shock they
are a choking hazard for your child.
• You should always dry your hands before you touch any electrical appliance or device, such as a light switch or
toaster or even hair dryer.
• Do not pull out the electrical plug out of the socket by pulling away its cord.
• Keep your electrical appliances switched off and unplugged when you are cleaning an electrical appliance.
• Replace worn, torn or any damaged cord immediately to prevent getting shocks.
• Switch off all the appliances and unplug before you leave your home.

Professor Liderbrock was a respected scientist. He was a great mind in his town. He had a nephew. His name was Axel.
He helped Professor Liderbrock in his experiments. One day, the professor bought an old book to read. When he opened
it, something fell out. It was a secret message written on old paper! Liderbrock and Axel had to put together all the parts
of the puzzle to figure out what it said. The professor read the code to discover that it was a map to the center of the earth.
They decided to start their journey to Iceland. They took the train till they arrived there. Once they arrived, Hans, a
famous explorer, accompanied them in their journey. They walked till they reached a peak of huge volcano, which lead
to the center of earth. They got down with deep concern. After hours, they found a place to rest. The professor checked
the tools they have like thermometer, compass and pressure gauge. He also collected samples of rocks and minerals he
found there to study them. After a few days of walking, Axel lost his company. So, he walked till he reached a forest
with huge mushrooms. At the end of the forest, he found Hans and Liderbrock looking for him. All of them were amazed
when they saw a beach light up with something like the sun. They sailed on a boat they found on the beach. During their
sailing, they saw many extinct sea creatures of old ages.
When they reached an island, they started a fire, but unfortunately, huge numbers of Mammoths ran after them. They hid
in a cave, but stones fell to lock it. They decided to explode the entrance. Once they did it, a huge volcano erupted and
pushed them above. They woke up finding themselves in Italy.
