Kyle ran into his house, slamming the door behind him. He threw his book bag on the floor and plopped onto the couch. After six hours of playing Grand Larceny VII, he ate some pizza and fell asleep with a slice on his stomach and his feet on his book bag. When Kyle came home from school the next day, he was noticeably distraught. He balled up his report card and placed it inside a soup can in the garbage. He then flipped the soup can upside down in the garbage can and arranged loose pieces of trash over it. As he plopped down on the couch, he let out a sigh and picked up his controller.

Tony walked out of the shopping mall with his arms full of bags and the sun shining on him. As he approached his car, he started awkwardly feeling around his pockets with his arm full of bags. He did not find what he was looking for so he transferred the bags on one arm to the other arm, which already had bags. Tony had a lot of bags on one arm. He still couldn't find what he was looking for. Now he dropped the bags and plunged both hands desperately into all of the pockets on his jeans. With a look of despair, Tony ran to his car. He tried to open the door, but it was locked. Then he saw something on the passenger seat of the car. He stopped looking and pulled his phone out of his pocket.

Mike got out of the driver seat of the classic car. He looked at the mailbox and then at the bumper. The mailbox was smashed and bent. The shiny chrome bumper had a dent about the size of a football around the passenger side. Mike shook his head and got back in the driver seat. He knew what he had to do. He didn't want to do it, but he had to. He drove back home and sat in the driveway for a few minutes, holding his head in his hands. Mike's dad came out of the house carrying a black garbage bag. He smiled and waved at Mike as he passed the driver side of the car. Then he looked again as he walked past the passenger side of the vehicle. His mouth dropped open and he let go of the garbage bag.

When you write to "show" instead of "tell," you use sensory details so that readers can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the experience for themselves. Read the paragraph below. Then check the sensory chart to see the details that make this description vivid. Paragraph: The rumbling grew as our raft bobbed toward the drop in the river. The air moistened and smelled of morning dew. Ahead of us, copper water plunged down a set of boiling rapids, which carved their curving way among jagged cliffs. My mouth went dry with a tang of fear. “Hold on, everybody!” I shouted.

Two valuable tips for using all five senses in your writing: Sensory details are used best in conjunction. The examples above contain more than one sense. Touch and taste are the most specific of the senses, because they’re unique to the individual experiencing them. Sound, sight, and smell are available to others nearby.

Read the following story. Mina's Mission It broke Mina's heart that so many adorable dogs in the world needed homes. That's why she started to volunteer at the dog shelter on Saturdays. And with her deep love of dogs, she knew she could persuade people to adopt them.On her first morning, a family with two young boys came in. The boys smiled and waved at the dogs behind the glass."Is that brown dog good with children?" their mother asked."Um, she's friendly with me," said Mina, "but I'll have to ask about that. She loves to play ball. And look at those big eyes.""What breed is she?"Mina didn't know."Where's she from?"Mina hesitated. "Let me check," she said. "She's so cute though, isn't she?"All day long Mina was asked questions that she didn't have the answers to. When the shelter closed in the afternoon, not one dog had a new home. Mina sighed. Before she left, she wrote down each dog's breed. The next time she volunteered, she interviewed the shelter employees about each dog's background and temperament. At home, Mina did some more research online. The following Saturday, a man walked into the shelter in the morning. He was looking for a young dog with a lot of energy to take on hikes with him and his grandkids."I have just the dog for you," Mina said. She introduced him to Mabel, a two-year-old vizsla. She explained that the vizsla breed is known to love hiking and is good with families. Mina had all the information the man wanted, and her heart soared when he asked for an adoption application. Which of the following best describes the main theme or lesson of the story?

Read the following story.

Cody liked the freedom that came with his first summer job. He worked at Mitchell's Farm, where people could come and pick their own corn, berries, and tomatoes out in the fields. Then they'd bring their produce to the checkout stand, where Cody would weigh it and charge the appropriate price. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were usually busy somewhere else, so Cody was trusted to manage the stand by himself.

For the most part, Cody enforced the Mitchells' rules. When someone asked for a discount or a sample, Cody said no. But he did sometimes bend the rules for friends, much to their delight.

"Go ahead, taste a few berries before I weigh 'em," he'd say when it was someone he knew. It was against the rules to eat something before you bought it, but everyone wanted to.

One day, a man came to the stand with a bushel of corn he had picked. Cody weighed the ears of corn and told the man how much it cost. The man looked confused.

"But I was here yesterday, and you told someone that for every five ears you buy, you get one free," he said.

Cody remembered. He had indeed offered that deal to the Thomases, who happened to be his neighbors. Now he regretted it. He saw Mrs. Mitchell baling hay close by. How was Cody going to explain that he had given a deal to those he knew while he made everyone else pay full price?

The man saw that Cody was looking at Mrs. Mitchell. "Is that the owner? May I speak to her?" he asked.

Cody thought about offering the man the same discount, but there were people in line behind him, and they were carrying corn, too. Cory hung his head and walked over to see Mrs. Mitchell.

Which of the following best describes the main theme or lesson of the story?
1. You should appreciate the people you work for.
2. Rules should be applied fairly.

Kevin and Juno were sitting on a park bench together. Neither of them was smiling. After a long period of silence, Kevin said, "This isn't going to work. I mean, you're a dog person and I'm a cat person." Juno nodded. A tear rolled down her face. Kevin went on, "If we got married and bought a house, what kind of pet would we get? Some kind of cat-dog? Somebody's going to be unhappy." Juno began sobbing and said, "Ok, let's just end it now. Have fun with your slobbery dogs." A marching band followed behind him, matching his pace. Behind the band were floats of all sizes and designs.
