In this article, Vladimir Stefanov, a surgeon who has worked in world-renowned oncology centers in Europe, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Hong Kong, will talk about the treatment of liver cancer in children and their peculiarities.
A pediatric oncologist, a specialist who specializes in treating children with liver cancer, treats children with liver cancer. He may refer the young patient to other specialists who have experience working with oncology patients. It is important to find a surgeon with experience in liver surgery.

The child may also be helped by:
- A radiation oncologist;
- Psychologist;
- A rehabilitation therapist;
- A nurse who specializes in child care;
- A social worker.
Today there are three ways to treat pediatric oncology.

Surgical intervention
If possible, a tumor from the liver is removed surgically:
- Resection - removal of the part of the organ with the tumor;
- Removal and subsequent liver transplantation - replacing the diseased organ with a donor organ. This option is possible if the cancer has not had time to spread beyond the liver;
- Removal of metastases - surgery to remove cancerous growths that have spread beyond the organ (to the lungs, brain, or nearby tissues).

Chemotherapy
In the case of children, chemoembolization of the hepatic artery is used, which consists of injecting medicine through a catheter. The medicine is mixed with a substance that cuts off the blood flow to the tumor, blocking the artery. As a result, the tumor does not receive oxygen and other substances necessary for growth and development. Blood flows to the liver from the portal vein.

Radiation therapy
This therapy is the treatment of cancer through X-rays and other types of radiation. It destroys malignant cells and prevents them from developing. Internal and external radiation therapy are used. In the first case, a radioactive substance is injected into the tumor area through catheters, needles, or capsules. External therapy is the use of a special device that directs a beam of radiation to the affected area of the body. The use of this type of therapy depends on the stage and type of the disease.
In addition, children can participate in clinical trials that help study cancer and improve future cancer treatments.
