document 1-
With the help of the Freedmen's Bureau, white women could teach African Americans in a school when they were gifted with the opportunity of an education (doc 1). Despite this being a large step in the right direction towards equality for black people, this does not exhibit the harsh reality of how mistreated they were in schools due to segregation and the stubborn white supremacists pushing for inequality in any way possible. Reconstruction had the right intentions with the wrong execution as it was deemed overall very ineffective.

Document 3- As Major General J.J. Reynolds reports during the time of the redemption phase Reconstruction there was an uprising of armed organizations such as the KKK that were founded on white supremacy (doc 3). The general goes on to highlight the effect these groups had on intimidating the populus into conforming to their ideals rather than the goals of Reconstruction. This mirrors the core ideals and role of the slave catchers that were prevalent prior to the Civil War. They would rob and murder any person of color who held power or sway in their community, effectively sending a message and setting them back to square one. Throughout this practice, the similarities are apparent; the Reconstruction phase fostered little to no change. Much like General Reynolds predicts “this will be the work of years” and themes of white supremacy and racism will run rampant in the United States for decades to come.

Document 1-
Despite efforts to eradicate racial inequality by the Freedman's Bureau, because of segregated schools and unequal quality of education (doc 1), there is still racism and African Americans were left in the same state if not worse off than they were before the abolition of slavery. Before slavery was abolished African Americans were not able to receive any form of education so this may have seemed like a step in the right direction however proven by the social stigmas and everyday racism, Reconstruction did not have the expected positive effect on African American life.

Document 3 -
The best example showing the ineffectiveness of the reconstruction era was shown by Major General J.J. Reynolds who expressed his concerns and interpretations of the Ku Klux Klan describing that the Klan would murder black union men and white officers, as well as intimidate others to join their cause (Doc 3). The existing harsh treatment and lynchings express the ineffectiveness of the reconstruction era as white supremacist groups still exist. While looking at the historical context surrounding this document, the year 1868 means that 3 years after the civil war white supremacist group were still prominent in the United States, and it truly highlights the uselessness of the reconstruction plan.

Document 3:
During the reconstruction era, the United States saw a large rise in hate groups such as the KKK, to reinstate white supremacy in society. Major General J.J. Reynolds of Texas had witnessed that groups like KKK had disarmed, robbed, and even murdered Union Soldiers and African Americans (Doc 3). Reynolds wrote this in 1868, which means the redemption phase was in the near future. The KKK and other groups did this to help reinstate white supremacy, so this was the beginning of these groups that were going to change United States society to a great extent, especially in the south.

Major General J.J. Reynolds, in a report to the United States secretary of war, said that “Ku-Klux-Klans”, a major hate group, are actively killing black men and United States officers and soldiers. He goes on to say that, to stop these organizations, it will “be the work of years” (Doc 3). The government would continue to have this issue, as white supremacists would keep hindering the ability of African Americans to live free lives. Good examples of this are the savage riots that took place at Wilmington in 1898 and Rosewood in 1923. This kept the African American population down, and made sure that the white race ruled with fear.

In the late 1860’s organizations such as the “Ku Klux Klan”, an independent, armed hate group installed fear into the former Union soldiers and blacks by killing anybody who disagreed with them causing an extreme and minute change during reconstruction for the worse (Doc 3). Major General Reynolds' audience was the federal government to explain that if measures aren’t taken to prohibit the “Ku Klux Klan” from these heinous crimes then equality would merely be impossible in America.

Document 5 -
In the late 1870s, a black politician on the rise to fame, James T. Rapier, presented a speech on the civil rights act of 1875. Surprisingly, Rapier was able to cultivate a place in congress and develop a message to his audience. Rapier Claims that “they were free, they were still not equal.” He would educate the House on the position and break the boundaries built by white people. James was pushing for equality of the races, when the rest of the House didn't realise the problem.

Document 3 - As explained by Major General J. J. Reynolds, armed organizations were being formed under the shared ideals and principals of white supremacy. During what is now known as the Redemption Period groups of individuals like that of the K. K. K. rose to punish Whites and Blacks alike for their Union ideals, regressing all forward progress made in the previous two phases of reconstruction.
