Biggest fear: My biggest concern for the upcoming semester is my ability to maintain and support a positive working environment as the work becomes more challenging and students may feel anxious for the school year to be over. Third and fourth quarters during my first year as a teacher were especially trying as I felt the dynamic in my classroom became toxic and not conducive for work or relationship building.

Biggest dream: My biggest dream for next semester is to get my students to engage in a challenging and fruitful project-based learning unit in which they develop connections to their local and global communities. This project is long and multifaceted, and there are many ways that I could have improved my practice from last year.

Choice in Classroom:
Choice is something that I would love to incorporate into my classroom, but have not yet fully utilized. In addition, I feel as though choice is not always supported in light of more quantifiable means of success. For example, in writing final essays, choice on essay topics were given less precedence than the ability to enforce a structure and measure results. I will continue to seek ways to better incorporate choice in my classes while also ensuring rigor and accountability.

Biggest lesson: I have learned to accept that I do not know and (when I think I know) I am often wrong. Accepting this fact has allowed me to approach many unforeseen obstacles with an open mindset and attempt to try new things. I also have learned the importance of being vulnerable in the classroom (I'm working on actually showing my students that vulnerability.)

1. My biggest concern is structuring a well developed and organized semester outline and pacing guide for my course alike team because we don't have that now and it has made this semester challenging.

2. My biggest dream is to create a very organized classroom with structured rituals and procedures. Also - I want to go as paperless as possible.

3. My students are able to make choice in what they learn with their 20% projects, which allows them to pick a problem in the community, research it, and build a solution. Students get to choose how they learn by providing a variety of options when learning new materials (station day - videos, mini lesson by me, reading, and research). They have choice with assessment by being able to choose to present a response to me verbally with evidence for their writing section of their summative if that feels more attainable than writing a paragraph.

4. The biggest lesson I have learned is that this work is way harder than I ever imagined, not just because of the time and energy it requires, but because of the emotional toll it takes to support kids that face so many challenges outside of the classroom. I knew my heart was in this work from the start, but I am really starting to see the reality in how emotional this work can be.

I have so many ideas but feel there is only so much time and my student can only handle so much a class.
2.that our PBL moves forward and we get cleared to build a hale for our school. Also that more students connect with the history part of our course.
3. I cannot change the formative and sumative but but I can have students voice what kind of lessons and activities they enjoy. The content has wiggle room as I can assign projects that allow student to pick from a list a person or event to research. And present.
4. How to let things go and not stress the small stuff it has given me so much freedom and a lot better sleep.

1. Jumping into harder content and making sure the students are keeping up. Also, that there aren't as many school breaks....
2. Biggest dream is for students to not just look at school work as a task, but as an opportunity.
3. I think what they learn is much harder than how they learn. I am constantly asking my students how they want to work and introducing them to different methods. I can do a lot better on how they're assessed in the classroom. What is in my control is the way I go about presenting my material.
4. Biggest lesson I've learned is that there is a lot more to a student that what I see for an 1hr 45 mins a day. There are so many things that are going on with these kids and I only ever see what is happening in the classroom.

1. My biggest fear is that my special education students will fall further and further behind, especially after winter break, because I am not providing enough spiraling of the concepts when I am moving forward.

2. Finding myself a schedule in which I am not working all the time. I need to spend more time doing things I enjoy than working on IEPs at midnight.

3. I have not been giving my students nearly enough agency to decide what they learn. In a way, they have been indirectly deciding what they learn as I sometimes teach the content using life examples based on their interests. I wonder if I can interview students more often to find out what they want to learn.

4. Accept failure. In college, the idea of success was very different than the concept of success as a teacher. While I strived to avoid errors in college to do well on my assignments, I quickly learned that in teaching, I can be more successful failing a lot, but learning from my mistakes.

I think in order to get my students involved in this process a bit more I would like to incorporate SHLC in my classroom.
4) The biggest lesson I learn is to remain flexible. I realized that this is ok and normal.

1. Right now I feel that I have so many ideas for how to improve my classes after teaching them this semester. I am afraid that my expectations for improvement are too high and that I will become really frustrated when I continue struggling with similar things next semester.
2. My biggest dream for next semester is that I have strong relationships with my students and can help equip them with things they need and are worried about post-high school graduation. I am scared about the senioritis I will encounter and dream that my class will be productive and effective despite the inevitable challenges.
3. Students have the opportunity to choose how they learn through recent implementation of Hyperdocs to teach new concepts. Students are asked at the beginning of the quarter what they would like to learn in their classes, but do not get much say in this as that semester goes on.
4. The biggest lesson I have learned is to have high expectations but to not get discouraged if you feel like you're failing. Coming out of college and an environment where everyone had prescribed ideas of "achievement" and "success," I had to adjust and am continuing to adjust what these things mean. The biggest lesson I have learned is to track progress, acknowledge progress and keep moving in that direction.

I'm barely keeping my head above water and I feel like I need a trip to the bermuda triangle
2. My biggest dream is taking our school competitive dance to place in their first competition in february. I also hope to ace my next danielson and show my admin I grew significantly.
3. I have not really thought too much into how students choose what they learn. I'm barely learning what I have to teach every week. In terms of how they learn, I am trying to get better a differentiating in the classroom but still need a lot of work. I try to give them chances to really discuss with one another and feed off each other. For how they are assessed, I try to set up constant moments to talk about learning intentions, learning importance and success criteria so students know how they are assessed.
4. The biggest lesson is that nothing will ever be finished so just try your best. It has impacted me a lot because I feel like I always have to put in 100% into everything but I physically cannot.

How do I approach this next semester and apply new practices and keep respect in my class.

Biggest dream is to have students doing more activities. Have students write notes in an active and engaging way, but something that is less time consuming. I want my students to respect each other. I want students to interact. To want to do work not because I said so, but because they want to learn. I want students to be creative in their answers and not say because they think it's the "right" answer.

Students don't have much freedom to what and how they learn because we're learning the structure of paragraphs so I'm struggling to how to differentiate in a way that they learn it without having to be forced to learn a certain structure.

This year I constantly reflect on the roles teachers have, the weight they carry, and the responsibility they take. Will going in hard after break work since they know i'm a soft shell and not a hard shell taco?

My dream-for second semester is for my "dangels- dangerous angels" to become angels in the class. meaning they self regulate their behavior without me harping at them.

Choice- Something i plan on working on over break is an assignment where each student tells me what their own vision of the classroom is, which will help me align mine as well as giving them choice.

Biggest Lesson- i dont have to be center of attention in order to give a great lesson. It's hard for me not to stand in front of the room and teach but to give the power of the lesson for them to teach each other. My most effective lessons are those that they teach each other, ex: Jigsaws. It feels like my hardest days where behavior becomes an issue is when I am standing in the front lecturing. They learn and listen better to each other.

Biggest fear is being so busy with executing on responsibilities (after school program, JHU coursework + portfolio, DOE bureaucracy stuff, etc.) that I have no time left over to engage in activities / explorations / friendships / relationships that would make me feel as if I have an authentic connection to the community in which I serve. Right now I feel that I effectively live in front of a computer in a generic American suburb, rather than that I live in a special place (Hawai'i) that is filled with amazing people (close friends whom I see frequently, colleagues with whom I interact in ways other than strictly job-related, etc.). All too often it feels that the only connections and relationships that I am able to develop deeply on this island are those that I have with my students. Next year all of them will be gone from my school, though. And all 50 states have amazing keiki who deserve teachers who will work for them and build strong relationships with them. Along similar lines, although I have amazing friends here, I have had amazing friends in all of the previous places where I lived, too, and in those places I had a whole lot more free time with which to deepen those relationships. Once June arrives, what will I have left, to keep me feeling rooted in Hawai'i?

1. My biggest fear is that my students will not be prepared for next year and for life? I feel a lot of pressure as an English teacher, since writing and grammar are really important to succeed in life, particularly since many of my students have a desire to go to college. Practically, my fear is that classroom management will still be a big struggle, and that subsequently my classroom will not be as productive as it needs to be.
2. My biggest dream is that students will feel empowered through what they are learning in my class, including what they are reading and writing. First semester included many local texts, whereas second semester will introduce more foreign topics. I hope that students will enter into these stories and expand their thinking and perspective.
3. Students are able to choose how they read, sometimes who they work with. I want to give students more choices with what they are learning, and give them more investment in the learning process.
4. I have seen the impact of injustice and trauma firsthand as a teacher. This has often made me very discouraged, but has also increased my belief in the importance of this work, even though I often feel like there's not much I can do.

1. Pacing guides. I want my kids to learn enough and learn the content well. These last two quarters have been a scramble to complete everything in time for finals.

2. My big dream to address this worry is to make an enlarged calendar to just plan out my life for the rest of the school year.

3. For my student's final essay, they will choose whether they want to writing a fictional narrative or a personal narrative. They have practiced both and will choose the one they feel most comfortable writing.

4. Be consistent. If I ever change anything in my classroom, be it a class rule or and organization strategy, I only do that at the beginning of a quarter. When students know what to expect in the class, they are much more behaved and work quicker.

biggest fear: not being able to handle the very wide variety of student levels in my classes // also dealing with feeling burned out
biggest dream: more research, more student-led, more projects, more globally-minded
student choice: very limited; the most choice I have is for certain assignments, I give options, but the structure of assignments themselves is usually given to them. I fear my students not being responsible when given choices, I have found structure to really be needed (even in creative times), so I'd like to find a way to have highly-structured student choice (if that makes sense)
biggest lesson: (this may sound pessimistic) but as a teacher, we are essentially set up to fail & deal with failure. Whether that is the failures of the system, of teachers, of our students, there is a very heavy weight that comes with that. It's an incredibly important job, but I have learned that balance and mindset are something CRUCIAL. It's not going to feel successful, but can still be filled with growth and progress.

1. Behavior management because I feel like I have a hard time reinforcing my expectations.
2. My biggest dream for second semester is to become like the teacher from the co-teaching strategies workshop. I want to be super specific with my directions and know exactly how to scaffold and help my students to be successful!
3. Sometimes I give my students options for assessments: (ie. right now we finished our unit on business magnates. I let them vote on if they would rather take a paper test or do an oral presentation on a specific business magnate), my students and I come up with a quarterly points goal on class dojo and if they succeed they will get a prize, etc.
4. The biggest lesson I learned so far is that confidence is key, because once your students see weakness, or that they know you are a pushover, or that you are inconsistent, your class can become chaotic. (I am still trying to work on this)
