The goal of coping strategies is to decrease the negative physical and mental stress brought on by situations or circumstances beyond one's control. In a study conducted by Hoel & Geirdal (2017), relationships were examined between the level of burden loved ones experience, the use of coping strategies, and mental health. They discovered that 62 percent of family of substance abusers showed a need for treatment in relation to the psychological distress they experienced as a result of their loved one's use (Hoel & Geirdal, 2017)

According to the 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015), there are an estimated 22.5 million Americans who self reported substance abuse. Of those, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (2012), between 40 to 60 percent of those who seek treatment will relapse, leaving a successful recovery rate of about 20 percent.

A guideline developed by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (2015), all patients in the health care setting should be screened for substance use/abuse. Once substance abuse is verified, interventions need to be implemented for not only the individual, but for the family. Family based therapies are used frequently as a preventative measure for at risk youth ("National Guideline Clearinghouse", 2015).
