The first partial-successful moon exploration by the Luna program based from The Soviet Union. During the Cold War, not only they fought about political matter, they also fought about reaching space, which Soviet Union won.

This object was planned to make impact on the moon and explore it. After the planning was finished, the Luna 1, launched on January 2, 1959, It launched, escaping the earth's gravity. From there it became the first spacecraft to exit the earth's orbit and also the first artificial object to orbit the sun. While in the air, it tragically had a malfunction at the control system missing the moon by 5,900 km. With no force to produce speed, it stays in space, orbiting the sun. It's now known as the "artificial planet".

In conclusion, Though it didn't reach the moon, it wasn't a failure nor was it a success rather a partial success.

Text was adapted from many sources

Sources: Luna 1 - Wikipedia

Messenger | NASA Mission to Mercury, Spacecraft Exploration | Britannica

nasa.gov

Luna 2 was the second of a series of spacecraft launched in the direction of the Moon. The first spacecraft to land on the Moon, it impacted the lunar surface east of Mare Serenitatis near the Aristides, Archimedes, and Autolycus craters. Luna 2 was similar in design to Luna 1, a spherical spacecraft with protruding antennae and instrument parts. The instrumentation was also similar, including scintillation- and geiger- counters, a magnetometer, and micrometeorite detectors. The spacecraft also carried Soviet "pennants", small metal pentagons with hammer and sickle symbols and a star and Cyrillic "CCCP" engraved on them, attached to metal balls. There were no propulsion systems on Luna 2 itself.

Zond 7 was launched towards the moon from a mother spacecraft (69-067B) on a mission of further studies of the moon and circulmunar space, to obtain color photography of the earth and the moon from varying distances, and to flight test the spacecraft systems. Earth photos were obtained on August 9, 1969. On August 11, 1969, the spacecraft flew past the moon at a distance of 1984.6 km and conducted two picture taking sessions. Zond 7 reentered the earth's atmosphere on August 14, 1969, and achieved a soft landing in a preset region south of Kustanai.

SOURCE:NASA - NSSDCA - Spacecraft - Details
