On the rough mud there are tracks visible extending towards a group of bushes.

Jody quickly getting on his feet, examines the tracks: Gabilan is very sick, and he has to be saved.

The panic of his horse turns his walking into running as he sees buzzards above a group of bushes circling down.

Jody: He must be in there, I have to hurry.
Jody quickly follows a winding route under tall sage bushes

When he reached the bushes, he saw the red pony in the distance nearing death. His feet were twitching attempting to move with his little energy. He slides down a hill with the mud muffling his steps

Jody jumped at the moment he saw the first bird start plunging it’s beak into the eye of the still horse.
Jody caught the bird on the horse and began hitting it with a piece of quartz even after he ended it.
A few seconds later, Carl  Tifflin, Mrs.Tifflin, and Billy Buck come in and take him away from the horse.

He quickly looks for tracks and runs after him. When he finally finds Gabilian he is being circled by buzzards. One of the buzzards landed on his head. It’s beak had just risen, dripping with dark eye fluid. Jody plunged into the circle like a cat. The black brotherhood arose like a cloud, but the big one on the pony’s head was too late. While it was preparing to take off, Jody caught it wing tip and pulled it down. It was almost as big as he was. The free wing crashed into his face with the force of a club, but he hung on. The claws fastened to his leg and the wing elbows battered his head on either side. Jody groped blindly with his free hand. His fingers found the neck of a struggling bird.  He was super worried.
