Social Change in Healthcare

A health-related positive social change topic that is very important to me is the promotion of health and preventative care. Throughout my career as a nurse, I have observed the overall health of our population decline. Western medicine is the forefront of healthcare and objectively focuses on intervention and treatment. It is also a responsibility of western medicine to educate about preventative care measure and promote health. I feel like preventative care and health promotion often falls through the cracks or gets lost in translation. I am engaged to striving to make an impact in this health-related change by taking time to educate people and provide them positive resources that will help promote change. One of the biggest barriers to educating, supporting, and promoting this topic is not enough time. I have made it my mission to advocate for patients so that they have ample time to process and form questions if they have them.

Current vs. Future Change Agents

Of the six distinct types of social change agents in regard to my current social change effort, I have adopted the ultracommitted change-maker type. I have made it my personal mission to help educate and promote health and wellness and preventative care while at work and outside the walls of my facility. Between my community I have established myself as a resource for those wanting help and even people who haven’t addressed that they need help. Much like the social agent of ultracommitted change makers, I have a strong belief that I can and will make a difference in my community. I feel strongly that I am able to positively influence my community, because the topic at hand requires urgent intervention and I believe I have the knowledge and resources to help promote the change.

How current reflects future change agents

I believe that the nursing profession is comprised of ultracommitted change makers. I have learned that social change cannot happen solely by the influence of one individual. But it is a collaborative movement of individual and group support. Current social change agent types will effect my future social change goals because everyone has a different interpretation on level of importance (Walden, 2013). Ultimately, the future social change goals can be achieved by engaging these different types of agents and motivating them in a way tailored to the type they associate with.

Nursing is Social Change

Advocating for social change is the responsibility of the nursing profession. As stated in the video “Nurses creating positive social change,” nurses are social change agents and social change happens every time a nurse starts their shift (Walden, 2017-2021). I believe nurses are the greatest patient advocates. Their daily job responsibilities and constant presence at the bedside allows nurses to develop a rapport and relationship based on trust with their patients. Nurses are constantly striving for better patient outcomes through the use of evidence based practice and quality improvement indicators. Patients, their families and the community observe and recognize this delivery of high quality care and advocacy and in turn trust nurses with their daily care. Furthermore, I believe that social change can only happen if the community adopts it. And also the greatest influence for change comes from a force with numbers. Nursing is one of the most highly recognized professions that influences change as a group.
