Madagascar by Isabella Perez

I chose Madagascar because I feel like we never hear about the country’s people or culture. When people do talk about Madagascar, we only hear about the animals in particular, so a lot is left out.

The Malagasy people believe that after death, souls remain omnipresent in the lives of the living. The souls of the dead and their god, Zanahary, both have the ability to positively or negatively affect the lives of the living. Because of this, Malagasy people have great respect for the dead and often bury them in beautifully painted tombs to provide respect and peace.

Every September, Madagascar holds the Donia Music Festival. More than 40,000 people come from Madagascar, nearby Islands, and internationally to enjoy the music, sports, and food. The festival is meant to bring attention to mainly Madagascar’s culture and musicians, but also to the various island cultures that exist nearby.

Malagasy traditional dances have a lot of order to them. Different dances have specific uniforms, chants, and even shapes in which the performers stand in. No matter what dance it is, they are all very lively and the entire body is used in some way.

Even today, writing is not especially considered a good profession in Madagascar. Most authors only write as hobbies alongside full time jobs, and very few publishing houses exist. Because of this, not many Malagasy novels have been translated into other languages. The more well known novels have been written by Malagasy in French and aimed at a French audience. Despite this, Andry Andraina, a Malagasy author, published his novel “Lamenting Lands” in his native language and French. His novel was written to help connect both sides of Malagasy literature in a way to write about their culture, but to also make it available to a wider audience.

Rice has always been the predominant staple of Malagasy cuisine. Malagasy people also fish, hunt, and forage. Because Madagascar is in such an ideal place to trade with South Asian countries, especially India, international foods and spices are also integrated into the usual meals. For the most part, Malagasy people will have meals of rice with various sides of fruits, vegetables, and protein. A traditional, common drink is Malagasy rice water, but Cola, beer, and coffee are widely available too.

Across the island, clothes can greatly vary. In some villages, Malagasy will wear brightly colored, very westernized clothes like T-shirts and shorts. More commonly however, is the Lamba garment. The lamba has deep rooted ties to Malagasy culture and is usually very brightly colored and worn by men and women. If not worn everyday, the lamba is most definitely worn for special occasions, including burials.

The Amber Mountain National Park is one of the most diverse areas of Madagascar. The Park shows that Madagascar is truly famous for it’s wildlife for a reason. The park contains volcanic lakes where rare species of animals are able to thrive there and nowhere else in the world. The park is rich in other lakes, waterfalls, jungle-land, and mountain ranges. The park contains thousands of fauna and flora species, including dozens of rare chameleons, orchids, birds, and insects. Lemurs are also very common in the park and very popular!
