The Great Depression, which lasted from 1929 to 1939, was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. It started after the 1929 stock market catastrophe, which stopped Wall Street and caused the loss of millions of investors. Consumer spending and investment fell during the following years, which led to sharp drops in industrial output and employment as faltering businesses laid off workers. When the Great Depression peaked in 1933, there were 15 million unemployed Americans and nearly half the nation's banks had failed.

During the Great Depression, "Hooverville" came to refer to shacktowns and homeless camps. There were dozens in the state of Washington and hundreds across the nation, each bearing witness to the early 1930s housing and employment crises.

A distinctly African American sensibility gave rise to jazz. Numerous black communities with their own histories and impacts remained in America after slavery. African Americans developed a unique musical fusion by fusing more European-influenced harmony and structure with African rhythmic and percussion techniques. Jazz was particularly distinctive for its emphasis on improvisation, which gave musicians unheard-of freedom of expression.
