On 25 April 2010, the BCCI suspended Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, for "alleged acts of individual misdemeanors". The suspension notice was served on him by Rajeev Shukla, BCCI vice-president, and N Srinivasan, the board secretary, sending an e-mail to the same effect. It followed a day of negotiations with interlocutors attempting to persuade Modi to resign but per-empted a potential flashpoint at a scheduled IPL governing council meeting, which Modi had said he would attend. Modi was officially barred from participating in the affairs of the Board, the IPL and any other committee of the BCCI.

Chirayu Amin, an industrialist and head of the Baroda Cricket Association, was named interim chairman of the IPL by the BCCI, following Lalit Modi's suspension. According to BCCI, many important documents were missing from the IPL and BCCI offices. "Many of the records are missing. The IT is asking for documents. We don't have them. We have asked BCCI CAO Prof Ratnakar Shetty to look into the missing records and papers," said BCCI president Shashank Manohar.

In March 2011, Modi's passport was revoked following a complaint by the Enforcement Directorate. The ED got a blue corner Interpol notice against Modi for breaching rules related to the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) when he was the IPL chief. Modi did not appear for questioning, and was accused of acquiring properties outside India by misusing his influential position. Without his passport, Modi was unable to travel outside the UK. He challenged the ED's decision in a London court. He could not return to India without being arrested and questioned by the ED and the police.

He was a close associate to Vasundhara Raje ,the , then Chief minister of the state of Rajasthan.
He was a powerful figure in Rajasthan, and came to be known as a "super chief minister". He visited Jaipur frequently, where ministers and civil servants would queue up to meet him and ask for favors. Modi then entered the real estate business with a company called Amer Heritage City Construction Pvt Ltd, where his wife, Minal, served as a director. Modi pressured local officials and secured control of two havelis near the Amer Fort, in contravention of Archaeological Survey of India's rules. He intended to renovate and convert these havelis into a heritage resort. During Raje's tenure, the Jaipur Development Authority framed ad-hock rules to allow re-classification of agricultural land and its use for non-agricultural purposes. This change, which benefited several big builders from Delhi, was allegedly presided over by Lalit Modi. During a cricket match, he slapped a constable for walking into his box at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, leading to protests by the city's constabulary. Modi's increasing power in Rajasthan politics became a key issue in the 2008 Rajasthan Elections, due to which Raje lost and Ashok Gehlot of Congress, succeeded Raje as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. After the ouster of Raje government, his power in Rajasthan reduced considerably.

Lalit Modi first arrived in the BCCI through Rajasthan, where he was elected president of the cricket association. That win came with a seat at BCCI's meetings. One year later, Sharad Pawar became president of the board after ousting Jagmohan Dalmiya. Modi made sure he was on the winners side, and was appointed Vice President of BCCI. In three years, he took revenues of the board to $1 billion.

His best moment was in 2008, when the board gave its assent for the Indian Premier League, Modi's mastermind project. Its success was huge, and wiped out a previous cricket league that had been formed. Modelled after football's English Premier League, the IPL attracted top stars of all test playing nations, and big money from corporate leaders such as Mukesh Ambani, India's richest man and owner of Mumbai Indians, to the flashy Vijay Mallya, owner of Bangalore Royals. It became the biggest cash cow of the BCCI. Last year, Pepsi paid Rs 397 crore for a new sponsorship contract. That's in addition to other contracts with Nimbus, and Star Sports, which contribute to the league's whopping $3.2billion worth.

Modi stayed at the top of the IPL hierarchy until 2010, with the league reporting bigger profits and revenue each year. Modi also pushed for the Champions League where top sides from all T20 leagues play each other. Again, this was modeled after the Champions Trophy in European football. This tournament was also a big hit with spectators. During this reign, it seemed that the tycoon could do no wrong.

In emails leaked over the weekend in the Sunday Times of London, it is apparent that foreign minister Sushma Swaraj took a lenient view of Modi and said that India had no objection to him traveling. This was a marked reversal of the government's position after the UPA had gone to the extent of saying that allowing Modi to travel might adversely affect India's relationship with the United Kingdom. With the help of Indian-origin MP Keith Vaz, Modi was able to secure travel documents and was free to travel around the world. He did so, and posted pictures from Jamaica and Cuba with Paris Hilton and Naomi Campbell, after telling Swaraj that he needed permission to travel so that he could be with his cancer-stricken wife in Portugal.

What happens next? Modi is enjoying life, as he can now travel wherever he wants to. If he ever comes to India, he might be detained at the airport and put in ED's custody. If proven guilty, he will go straight to jail, pending appeals and bails. To escape this, he is unlikely to ever come back unless the ED drops cases against him. The latest controversy might hurt Swaraj, but Modi's life is much better than what it was before Narendra Modi (no relation) came to power

Ethical evaluation by using Relevant Theory

The Best theory to explain this situation would be egoism and virtue ethics. In his early life, while he was a sophomore, Lalit Modi and three other students tried to buy half a kilogram of cocaine for $10,000 at a motel. The man posing as a seller threatened them with a shotgun, and robbed them of $10,000. The next day, Modi and his friends beat up a student, whom they suspected of setting them up. As a result, on 1 March 1985, Modi was arrested on charges of conspiracy to traffic cocaine, assault and second-degree. This incidence clearly projects that of Mr. Lalit Modi was not an decent and ethicall man, also it shows to what roots he belong to and what was his moral character was. If we see more backwards then In 1980, he was expelled from St. Joseph's for truancy, having left school to watch a movie, which again indicates the man's real roots to which he belongs. His father was a well to do person who were into one of India's leading business families which definitely gives a man like Lalit modi a upper hand to use unethical means to get the work done in order to satisfy his ego. A day after the IPL final, BCCI suspended Modi on 22 charges, including bypassing the governing council while taking decisions, not following proper processes, bid rigging, awarding contracts to his friends, accepting kickbacks on a broadcast deal, selling franchises to members of his family, betting and money laundering. In March 2008, Lalit Modi was listed among India's 30 most powerful people by India today magazine. The most powerful person of the country and all he was best at satisfying his wants and ego. His name never came up for serving his nation and the people living in it. All this power and money spent over nothing. In 2013, a BCCI committee found Modi guilty on 8 charges, which resulted in his expulsion from BCCI. 1) Rigging bids: Adding two onerous clauses to the invitation to tender draft without informing the BCCI, to favour two bidders. (Modi claimed that he had verbally informed the BCCI President Shashank Manohar). 2) Threatening a representative of the Kochi Tuskers Kerala to give up their franchise rights or face sanctions.
3) Favouring World Sports Group (WSG) for TV rights.
4) Failing to disclose links to owners with interests in Internet rights (Guarav Burman, his step-daughter's husband, held a stake in Global Cricket Venture).
5) Misconduct of threatening to "expose certain individuals in the BCCI" via tweets.
6) Planning a rival cricket league with clubs in England.
7) Awarding theatrical rights to a company without the governing council's approval.
8) Signing a free commercial time deal with an agency without the governing council's approval As a result, BCCI banned Modi for life in 2013.

Modi alleged that one of the equity shareholders was Sunanda pushkar a close friend and later on the wife of Shashi Tharoor .At that time Shashi Tharoor was the External Affairs minister in the ruling Congress government.Later on Shashi Tharoor had to resign due to allegations of Corruption. On 24th April,2010 the BCCI suspended Lalit Modi on 22 charges against him that included not following proper Processes,Awarding contracts to friends, betting, money laundering, selling franchises to the members of the family.
