Two years later Mackay and Lawson partnered with Craig Weller and Mark Skiles and merged there two grocery stores, SaferWay and Clarksville Natural Grocery. The four of them opened the first Whole Foods Market on September 20, 1980 in Austin, Texas. At the beginning of 1984 the four partners expanded stores into Houston and Dallas and New Orleans with the purchase of Whole Foods Company in 1988. Then, in 1989 they expanded to the West Coast and in 2002 they opened stores in Canada. Today Whole Foods Market has more than 500 retail and non-retail stores in the U.S., Canada, and UK.</div>]]></description>
