Intertextual Reference - Hogwarts
Hogwarts is an enchanted school much similar to the island of Beechwood. The people on the island have no contact with the outside world, but they are taken away by its magic. On the island only direct family of the Sinclair’s are allowed. Similarly, Hogwarts only allows witches and wizards. Half-bloods are not looked upon fondly in Hogwarts (people with only one magical parent), which is the same as Gat not being welcome on the island because he is only a Sinclair by marriage.

Intertextual Reference - A Passage to India
A Passage to India is a text which has the themes of separation and racism. These themes are also shown in We Were Liars because Gat feels seperated from everyone becasue he is different and is treated like an outcast by Cady's grandfather. Racism is also shown in the way that the grandfather treats both Gat and Ed. There is also seperation between Gat and Cady throughout the whole book. Cady's grandfather and mother are always trying to seperate them and then they are seperated after Gat's death.

Intertextual reference- Fatima shock!: The real truth about Fatima and Future Apparitions is a book uncovering the secrets of what truly happened within the town of Fatima. Fatima is a central Portuguese town originally named after a Catholic pilgrimage site where the virgin Mary allegedly appeared in 1917. In the novel 'We Were Liars', one of Harris and Tippers golden retrievers was named Fatima. We believe that the Sinclairs love the dog Fatima very much and because that Fatima is the dog of Harris and Tipper it relates to how the Sinclairs worship Harris, just as the people of Fatima worship Virgin Mary.

Mark Twain's work The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, published in 1876, is about a little boy growing up besides the Mississippi River. It is set in the 1840s in the town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, which is modelled on Twain's hometown of Hannibal. Tom Sawyer has multiple experiences in the novel, many of which he has with his pal Huckleberry Finn.

The story of Tom Sawyer relates to the we were liars book. This is because in both books they adventure, in the we were liars book the characters adventure to the island and explore to the caves and other places. In the Tom Sawyer story, tom goes adventuring everyday and goes exploring into the scrubby land. In both books the characters go exploring.

What is it about?

Sleeping beauty is a well-known fairy tale about a princess who is cursed to sleep for a hundred years by an evil fairy, to be awakened by a handsome prince. The curse can only be broken by a princes along the help with three good fairies.

How does it connect to We Were Liars?

Sleeping beauty is a story about a princess gets put under a curse and stays asleep for many years until she gets woken up by a handsome man. This relates to cadences accident. The four liars had a mission to burn down the family home in summer 15. Although they were prepared and knew what to do cadence wasn’t sober and set the room alight. Everyone trapped inside cadence runs to water as she's got burnt not knowing the 3 liars were still inside. Cadence was in shock. She killed her boyfriend, her cousins and her dogs. She was traumatized. She couldn’t believe what she did, who she lost. She got diagnosed with Post Traumatic Headaches also known as PTHA.pt 1 pg. 34. She couldn’t remember what happened to the liars, nor why they weren't answering her emails or messages back. She wasn’t facing reality. She didn’t face the truth for two years. Until summer 17 she was woken up to what happened. She saw Gat. The one she loved. Johnny and Mirren the once filled with millions of memories they shared. Cadence was awakened after two years of trauma where the ghost of her boyfriend told her what happened. She realized it was time to face the truth. Sleeping beauty might have got cursed to fall asleep but cadence put herself at ease to make herself believe they were always with her.

Brideshead Revisited

Brideshead Revisited is about the life of Charles Ryder, predominantly his experiences and relationship with the Flyte family. The Flyte’s have an abundance of power, money, and privileges. They are English Catholics that live in a mansion of an ancestral home. This home is called Brideshead. When he visits Brideshead because of his best friend, Sebastian Flyte, Charles falls in love with Julia Flyte. As Charles becomes more involved with the Flyte family he finds himself at the odds with the family’s strong Roman Catholicism.

Brideshead Revisited connects extremely well to the book We Were Liars. It does so because of two main points, the first being: the main character Charles Rider being interlocked with an extremely powerful, rich, and privileged family and feeling a bit like an outsider. This connects because it is much the same as Gat’s situation in the book, We Were Liars. He always felt like an outsider with the Sinclair’s because they had so much power because of their money and often used it to control him. The second main point is how Charles is connected to the family being friends with Sebastian and in love with one of his family members (Julia). This is because Gat in the book We Were Liars was connected to the family through Johnny his best friend and falls in love with one of Johnny’s family members (Cadence).
