Due to the degree of Paganism in Rome, the emperor Constantine decided to move the capital of the Empire to Byzantium. Around this time, shortly after this move, the barbaric "Germanic" tribes began invading across Europe. This invasion had the effect of plunging Europe into what is known as the "Dark Ages". The combination of economic and political turmoil, geographical distances, and linguistic differences, created a rift that caused the eventual estrangement of West and East.

The inevitable split in the Church took place in 1054. There had been unease between the two Empires for centuries but he final straw was when Pope Leo IV sent Hambert to meet with the Patriarch of the Constantinople, Cerularius, the leader of the eastern church. The meeting was for many purposes including refusing to give Cerularius the title of "Ecumenical Patriarch" and insisting that he recognise the Pope's claim to be the head of all the churches, including both east and west churches. The meeting resulted in Humbert excommunicating the Patriarch as Cerularius refused to agree to the terms presented. This action wasn't approved by Pope Leo IV. In response to being excommunicated, the patriarch excommunicated Pope Leo IV, Humbert and other legates.

The great schism ended with the estrangement of the East and the West, but to fully understand the events that occurred we must know how the event unfolded and developed. The East and the West had many differences that were on going and because of these major differences the great schism developed. In 1054 an excommunication was delivered by Cardinal Humbert to the Patriach of Constantinople, Michael Cerularius who was the leader of the East, the excommunication was sent by none other than Pope Leo who was the leader of the west. Michael Cerularius then decided that he too was going to send an excommunication to Pope Leo because he thought that it would only be fair that if he was going to be removed from his position that so should the person that excommunicated him from his leadership. Even after both leaders were excommunicated the western church " Roman Catholic" Church and the Eastern Church " the Greek Catholic" or "Greek Orthodox Church" still had their major differences
