Friendship has been explored deeply through graphic novels. Two graphic novels I read this semester were This Was Our Pact and Anne of Green Gables. In both of these novels we watched unexpected friendships bloom, challenges and difficulty within those relationships, and ultimately the growth and redemption of those friendships.

This has shown the human belief that friendship is incredibly valuable and cherished and worth fighting for. I think this pushes children socially to enter into relationship with those who are different than them, ask for forgiveness when needed, give grace to those they care about and work through conflict. I think the exploration of theme of friendship through literature promotes connection.

A world-famous trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione can easily be pointed to from the themes of friendship explored through the Harry Potter series that was turned to film.

The display, exploration, and discussion of friendship in these movies revealed the individual gifts and talents each person brings to a relationship, and when friends work together in unity, the power of the team can accomplish great things. While there were certainly challenges that the trio faced, I believe these movies showed how strong and powerful quality friendship truly is. Therefore, these movies promote connection and encourages friendship in children.

Chapter Books

The theme of friendship is commonly explored in chapter books for children's literature. One example is the book What Lane? by Torrey Maldonado. This book displays friendships between middle school boys of different races. It shows the challenges that these differences can bring, when one friend doesn't see things the way the other does. This book does a beautiful job of displaying what it looks like to grow in understanding, empathy and strength by getting know and fight for our friends who our different than us. I think this book creates a movement for children to speak openly about hard things with their friends, and gives them an example of what it looks like to stand up for each other.

I think that children's toys also create the space for children to act out and display what friendship is through their imagination. They may be given examples through previous books or movies, but then through toys they get to put it into play themselves. Often times dolls and action figures are bought in multiple or played with together-- this is because humans were made for connection and children have been given the examples of those friendships and connections. Through toys than can both create friendships and connect with others.

I have noticed that a classic display of friendship in art is a group of people (or animals, etc), with their arms wrapped around each others' shoulders. I think this represents that friendships are full of love and support. This universal image of leaning on one another, teaches children the importance of friends and support systems. This creates a culture of intimacy, strength and stability in friendship.
