is a rift lake located in southern Siberia, Russia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast.Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing 22 to 23% of the world's fresh surface water. With 23,615.39 km3 (5,670 cu mi) of fresh water, it contains more water than all of the North American Great Lakes combined. With a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft), Baikal is the world's deepest lake. It is among the world's clearest lakes and is the world's oldest lake, at 25–30 million is the seventh-largest lake in the world by surface area.
Lake Baikal formed as an ancient rift valley and has a long, crescent shape, with a surface area of 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi), slightly larger than Belgium. Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of them endemic to the region. It is also home to Buryat tribes, who raise goats, camels, cattle, sheep, and horses on the eastern side of the lake, where the mean temperature varies from a winter minimum of −19 °C to a summer maximum of 24 °C

The region to the east of Lake Baikal is referred to as Transbaikalia or as the Transbaikal, and the loosely defined region around the lake itself is sometimes known as Baikal. UNESCO declared Lake Baikal a World Heritage Site in 1996.
https://ru.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Байкал

There is no consensus on the formation of Lake Baikal. One thing is clear: it is located in a rift basin. Several versions of the formation of this lake were put forward: As a result of land failure in an earthquake (Pallas ' hypothesis). As a result of the compression of the earth's crust in the horizontal direction (Chersky's hypothesis). As a result of land subsidence on the fault surfaces (Obruchev's hypothesis). As a result of processes in the world rift system, the Baikal rift (a fault in the earth's crust).
https://chara-baikal.ru/proishozhdenie-bajkala/

There are many interesting expositions waiting for us in the Baikal Museum. For example, when viewing the exhibition "The History of underwater research on Lake Baikal", visitors will see the first diving suits and scuba gear, models of the "Paisis" and "Mir" bathyscaphes that sank to the bottom of Lake Baikal, the exhibition "The Living World of Lake Baikal under a microscope", where with the help of microscopes and computers you can not only observe the life of the tiny inhabitants of Lake Baikal, but even make a film about them. In 2004, the museum opened a truly unique exhibition-aquariums, which are connected by a system of flowing waters with Lake Baikal, which allows you to create living conditions close to ideal for the inhabitants. You will see sponges, large freshwater shrimp-gammaryusov, various fish, including omul, grayling and Baikal sturgeon, but the real decoration of this exhibition is certainly the seal-the only mammal of Lake Baikal
https://www.baikal-olkhon.ru/mesta-na-baikale/listvya..
