I love the meditation and mindfulness talk from this chapter. "Focus is an essential skill for students to have in school and in life" (pg.122-123) and those 2 things really help focus. It will reduce their stress and in a high school setting anything I can do to help reduce stress I am all in for! I am though going to now start using the self-talk and personal reflections on top of the meditation.

Just by the nature of my job, I don’t have much opportunity to utilize these strategies. However, we anticipate a change to the master schedule next year so we look forward to having more time in the classroom doing guidance lessons. I particularly think the gallery walks, ride my bus, and team greeting strategies could be used in conjunction with group guidance lessons on respecting others, teamwork and cooperation.

The activity is called Song Lyric Analysis and the student’s can get either a paper form or a digital form uploaded on Google Classroom. Then, the student’s pick a song, of their choice, to analyze, interpret, and write about. By giving the student’s the option to choose this activity and to choose the song, the student’s analysis, interpretation, and writing is always good quality for that individual student.

I use a lot of Positive Self-Talk with my students. If they say something like "I don't get it", I will have them change the statement to "I don't get it yet". I also require them to be more specific. We talk about what exactly they don't understand and what parts they already know. We focus on giving our best effort and what that looks and sounds like ("I don't know it yet", "What strategies can I use", "I can ask for help", etc). I try to be really consistent in correcting negative statements. We are at the point now where my students will help each other correct it or they will stop say it again and then move on.

It can be confusing to memorize 26 or more of these intricate handshakes, but showing the students that you care enough about them to remember a personalized gesture really motivates them and makes them feel special. I typically use the handshakes in moments of praise, so they have begin to correlate the handshakes with "Great job!" as a silent way to give them praise and foster positive self talk.

I use Kids Bop a lot with my students. Depending on what we are doing, like working on cursive writing, it works perfectly. I use Kids Bop because it is school word friendly and my students seem to like it better than instrumental. I do use instrumental music during hard tasks, like testing, to help their focus. Having music playing helps my kids ignore the sound some of my students may be making that may upset them. It also helps my higher active students concentrate because they have more things to focus on.

I use music (Kids Bop) and movement for brain breaks, especially if we have been sitting and working/focusing hard for a while. We have a 3 1/2 hour block in the morning with no breaks so it is important to throw in some kind of break or students are dragging by lunch. I also will play more calming/classical type music during some independent work times.

I love using music to calm students down in my classroom. When they come to me angry or upset, I will often dim the lights and put on soft piano music. I let the student either lay down or rest their heads and I read them a simple picture book. The actual words to the book don't matter, as long as the music is playing. After about 3 to 5 minutes of this I notice they are much more ready and willing to begin the lesson. Sometimes it just takes a moment to relax to get ready to learn something new.
