He is a very good role model, and the fact that he was daring enough to touch Boo Radley's house gives Scout confidence in general. Scout has a lot to learn from him, like his imagination, and his daredevil personality. She is already starting to kind of absorb Jem's personality. Jem also keeps Scout in check. This is really helpful, because when Scout gets the gum from the tree in Boo Radley's yard, Jem immediately says to spit it out. This is going to help protect Scout from the future, and is going to help Scout learn through her mistakes.

Of course, at times, he can be brave like trying to tap Boo Radley's house, but I think that was out of stupidity and cockiness. I think Scout is a better influence on Jem because she was trying to stop him from constantly bothering Boo Radley, but he still does it and she has to go along with him because she is younger.

I think Jem is a good role model overall. He doesn't necessarily always do the right thing but its clear that he's still looking out for Scout's well being, like telling her not to mind Alexandra so much because he knew that do so would turn her into someone she didn't want to be. He seems to symbolize everything Scout wants to be as well. He's courageous, confident, has clear and consistent morality gained from his experiences, and is able to learn from his mistakes. He does a good job imprinting these characteristics onto Scout, like how he indirectly caused Scout to not disobey Calpurnia because she wanted to be like him. He appreciates Scout for who she is and tries to keep her on the right path, both signs of a good role model.

What I really like about Jem is his support for his sister, Scout. In every situation Jem is with his sister (which is basically almost every scenario), he makes sure to question himself and check to make sure that Scout is being treated the way it is necessary. For example, if he thinks something is too dangerous for Scout, then he asks her to step out. If she doesn't want to, then he lets her join in whatever he and Dill are about to do. Another example is when they are facing their father, Atticus, for something important. Usually after, Jem tries to handle the situation by making his own decisions and making Scout follow orders as he believes that his ideas are what's best.

As Jem got older, he became a great role model, and even before he was still a great one. Whenever Scout does something wrong, or ws talking about doing something that wasn't a great choice, Jem was almost always the first one to tell her not to do it, and he always gave advice on what she should instead do. For example, as he got older, we saw that he must have realized that Atticus was stressed about the case, as he told Scout many times to not bother him, or not to cause him much trouble. Scout has always looked up to him, and I think Jem has always done his best, and succeeded to be a person with characteristics that others, including Scout, should develop. Whenever he is around Scout, he is constantly a person that Scout can look up to as a brother, and as a role model.

I feel like Jem's experience and time with Miss Dubose taught him so much. Initially, he disliked her, and the feeling was probably mutual. She constantly insulted not only Jem and Scout, but also her father, and did so using extremely racist terms. Naturally, when he found out he had to read to her for a month, every day for two hours, he was furious. Yet, I think this helped him mature. Afterwards, we saw many changes in his character, and I think this is because those two hours everyday helped him learn patience, calmness, dealing with anger, and other traits that one should strive to have. On a side note, after he was done with the reading, and especially after he learned why Miss Dubose wanted this, I feel that the hate he had for her definitely weakened. I feel that the experience overall helped shape Jem into becoming a young adult, and is an essential part of his transition from being just a child, to being a bit more grown up.
