10 ways to have a better conversation

From that video, i learn 10 things on how to have a better conversation

1. Don't multitask
- as the speaker said, be in that moment. Don't shift you're attention to something else while you're still in the conversation with someone.

2. Don't pontificate
- Don't be a dense person. You'll always learn something when having a conversation with someone. Set aside any personal opinions and be more open-minded when be in that conversation with someone.

3. Use open-ended question
- The speaker suggest to use the wh question to ask them how they feel. If we ask them 'Are you happy?' they will only reply between a yes or a no and probably don't go further explain why they feel that way. Try asking 'How does it feel?' and they'll give a much more interesting response than asking 'Are you happy?'. As the speaker said, let them describe how they feel because they know better about how they feel then you.

4. Go with the flow
- let stories and ideas come to you as the conversation goes on. Don't let some idea or story you think it's good to distract you from listening to your conversation with someone. The story or idea might be not interesting to the conversation which can cause the conversation to be awkward later on. Let it come and go normally

5. If you don't know what is it, say that you don't know.
- admit that you don't know something rather than you pretend to know about it. As the speaker said, be more cautious with what you want to say. This is because we can embarrass ourselves if we try to pretend we know something.

6. Don't equate your experience with them.
- every individual has a different experience. If the person is talking about how they feel about their job, avoid from responding them by talking about how you feel about your job. As the speaker said, conversations are not a promotional opportunity.

7. Try not to repeat yourself
- avoid from trying to prove your point over and over again just to make sure your message is get through their heads. It can be condescending at times.

8. Stay out of the weeds
- forget about trying to go overly detailed about something. People are more interested about you (how you feel, what was your opinion and etc) when they engage in a conversation with you. Sometimes, they're just not interested in those details because it cause them to think more which can be a turn-off sometimes

9. Listen
- it is the most important aspect when having a conversation with someone. Be in that conversation. Try understand what the other person is talking about. Don't be a person who just wanna talk just because you're not interested in what they're saying. It's bad thing.

10. Be brief
- (this one is a bit confusing to me) try to be amazed or interested with people. When describing someone, try make it as short as possible but enough to get someone's attention. For example, 'did you know that he's a top scorer student' can easily get people's attention to talk about how interesting this person is.

To summarise, be a good listener and always show interest on what other people has to say because this show that you're in that conversation.

Here are ways to have a better conversation :

1. Listen
It’s very common to get caught up in our own heads while the other person is talking. We try to come up with a follow-up question, a witty remark, or a story of our own.

We do this because we’re so afraid of the awkward pause that happens when the person stops talking and we don’t know what to say next. Really listen to what the other person is saying and get out of your own head. When it’s your turn to speak, appreciate the short pause that happens because you need to think about what to say. It’s not awkward–it’s a compliment to the other person! This pause shows them you were listening.

2.Use the other person’s name frequently
Hearing the sound of our own name is very comforting. It’s a pity we don’t hear it more often!

So let’s change that. Every couple of sentences, drop the other person’s name. At the start of a statement, at the end of a question. To be more better in conversation.

3.Keep strong eye contact
There is much to be said about the science behind eye contact.

Keep strong eye contact both while we are listening and while us are speaking to a person.
