Through this quote we are able to see how Rose Mary teaches a lesson to Jeannette by telling her that what defines and makes the Joshua tree unique is its struggle. 

This symbolizes the fact that as Jeanette gets older she would come across many struggles but because of the struggles it was able to shape the person she is today.

This quote informs us that at a young age Jeanette had to mature. She was only three years- old when she was already cooking for herself and by herself without any adult supervision.

In this quote we can see that as Jeannette and her siblings were growing up they started to accept that they were poor and not everything was an adventure. They started to realized the way they looked and that they would always be hungry.

This image represent the idea of Jeannette and her siblings coming across and accepting the idea that they are poor. In this quote we are able to see how Rex forces Jeannette to learn how to swim. Jeannette was the only one who wasn't able to swim so Rex took upon to teach her the rough way. Jeannette was scared of drowning but Rex forced her too.

Even though, Rex was an alcoholism and had many defects, Jeannette saw him as the best dad she could ask for. She loved him above all the disappointments and failures. She also wasn't able to think what her life would've been without her dad.

Like many broken promises throughout the book we can see that building a castle was one of them. Rex made all the plans and dimensions which made himself and the children believe that he was gonna be able to build it. But after many years the children started to realize that the idea wasn't gonna happen. 

This picture symbolizes that the many times Rex told them that they would live in a big house with many windows was all false and it was never gonna be able to happen.
