      <item>
         <title>In May of 1861, three black slaves crossed the James River for freedom.  Major General Butler took them in and did not return them to their masters.  Soon more slaves filtered in, and Americans in the North said the Africans would work freely, if free to do so.  Butler saw them as people not property.  Those three black men had started a chain of action that would lead to the freedom of t people. </title>
