Small groups help to close the gaps in student learning. When implemented successfully, students who are struggling with a specific concept are pulled to work more closely with the teacher so that they get the targeted instruction that they need while other students work independently or in small groups together on other skills/ concepts. I've had great success utilizing small groups in all of the grade levels that I've taught and in each of the different subject areas. For example, in phonics I have students who are able work on a skill independently while I pull those who are struggling that day to work with me in a small group to practice more. After small group I move them onto the independent work to complete certain targeted parts or numbers on their own. The extra few minutes in an even smaller small group REALLY does help the kids to gain more understanding so that they are prepared to move forward.

Small groups are necessary to help target student individual needs. In whole group instruction it can be difficult to provide feedback for each student. Successes I have from small groups is participation. Striving students are sometimes left in the shadows in a whole group setting. Small groups allow those striving students to thrive as they are around other students with the same skills as them. They are more encouraged to interact and speak without the fear of embarrassment in a small group setting. - Burton
