Author: Nutt, Amy Ellis
Published: 2015
Genre: Nonfiction
Interest Level: High School

This book provides the story of the realization, diagnosis, and transition of Nicole, a transgender teen girl. All familial angles are involved, parents, Nicole's, and her identical twin brother. The family takes on obstructions within their day to day life, and the legal system of education, and transgender rights.

Teaching Idea: This book reads more like a biography, and would be better for students at higher levels, particularly high school. This would be a good book for reports, as it would allow the individuals the information a person has experienced and still time to research the legal aspects of all that is discussed.

Author: Stetz-Waters, Karelia
Published: 2014
Genre: Fiction
Interest Level: High School

This book follows the self discovery of a teen in Oregon, as she starts to realize her differences from others. Not only does she not want to go to school in the first place because she is "different" this difference could allow her to be openly discriminated against.

Teaching Idea: Although this book is fiction, it does bring into the mix many laws and the effect they could have on individuals who identify as LGBTQIA. This book could help individuals who are in the position of self discovery, as well as though who do not see the implicit bias that not experiencing a multicultural education can unfortunately provide. I would assign this book for my students to read to get a perspective of how other high school students lives are different, yet so similar.

Author: Faderman, Lillian
Published: 2015
Genre: Historical
Interest Level: High School

This book tells the story of how individuals who define themselves as LGBTQ were treated, beginning in the early 1950s. This time frame saw these individuals as criminals, mentally ill, sinners, with these thoughts, people were treated with hatred and inequality. Although leaps and bounds have been made on the equal rights front, it is important to remember all of the struggles that our predecessors went through. This book continues through to more recent times and the fight for legitimate equality; marriage.

Teaching Idea: I think the sentence stripping lesson would be a great tool to utilize for this book. As the information within can vary from being complex and confusing, for early laws, thoughts and feelings, to more common ideas that the students might be familiar with. I would have the students chunk the text up once they find a spot they are confused and stuck on, and then breakdown that information within that section. This would help ensure the students are understanding all of the vital information before moving on.

She shows that groups and individuals who exhibit behaviors relating to Supremacy are similar to the behaviors of the traumatized, with their ineptitude to tolerate differences. This book cuts through the popularity of scapegoating and blame, and how individuals in power use fear to manipulate a persons fear of the "other" to simply achieve their desired goal.

Teaching Idea: I would coordinate with other teachers, specifically history and political science teachers to coordinate a cross curriculum small group research assignment.
