We promote people who can pass leadership tests versus how students are being served."

"Its easy to demonize the current board of trustees but AISD is doing some amazing things. But we always have to be reminded that we are part of a system and it starts there. We (teachers) are the ones who are pushing against that everyday."

i think it’s also really important that we separate someone’s intelligence and value as a person from the process of learning a new skill. working with teachers and families I hear pretty disparaging self-talk as folks are learning “how to” tech. We have brilliant teachers and students who are equating their ability to use a device with their intelligence and it sucks. I think we (educators/leaders/friends/etc) can do a better job with messaging around this and supporting the learning curve when it comes to all of the new skills people are learning when it comes to tech tools for connecting and learning. People are amazing whether or not they know how to power wash a chrome book!

-Around community engagement, we have a small community engagement department and they facilitate community engagement sessions it is not responsive to their needs. When decisions are made it seems to go against what is said at these sessions which reduces the outcome at other events. People are able to serve on committees but those able to access those are privileged with the time and capacity to participate. The conversations become very cyclical.
Engage with families in different ways, ambassador programs, meet with families on the ground, listen.

-Go in and make strong authentic relationships with the community. A lot of families do not know the inequities, it is important to build connections across the district because it is easy to hide inequities when there is a disconnection.

-asking to hear from parents about their experience that differed
-as a parent in southwest Austin nobody really gets what the parents are going through. Kids logging into a chrombook is the last thing they are worried about. Board members need to have an awareness of what the experiences of lots of different families are. As a district that calls ourselves progressive we have no idea how to implement progressive schooling in our system.

I think it is important to see why kids end up at ALC and from what campus. It needs to be clear why kids are being sent to ALC and if these are discretionary or not. Listen to the parents.

One thing I do as a teacher as a teacher is I don't write referrals, I don't send them to administrators. I try to handle my students with love and compassion. We need to defund AISD PD it is a product of the school to prison pipeline. Redistribute the money to Dr.Wards department to expand the work of CP&I in the district. Dr.Ward is being passed up for promotions in the district.

I'm a proponent for empowering educators through increasing school based decision making and autonomy (with central support and oversight) and creating distributed leadership models on campuses. Interested in hearing from teachers how that might affect (positively and negatively) progress towards anti-racist culture in our system and what unintended consequences might arise?
