I've learnt that there are 5 factors we need in order to support life such as temperature, water, atmosphere, energy and nutrients. This 5 factor plays a vital role in maintaining lives on earth. And absence on one of these can have a great effect to someone. In this lesson, I've also learned the different subsystem of earth namely atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Just like the 5 factors, absence or changes on one of this subsystem can affect the other subsystem because as we all knew they are interconnected with each other.

The main thing I learned is that minerals make our whole world. And those minerals come from different ways in a process which they are made. Minerals are naturally made and cannot be replicated in the hands of a human, because it occurs with the accumulation of particles combined with heat and pressure to create those minerals that are made to make our world. 

I also learned the many different ways to extract them, using water, magnets, and other processes such as mining. These minerals are a big help to humanity knowing that most of our products are made using them. These things we use are composed of the minerals alone helps us get through our daily lives. And not just the things we use, but also the places we live in, where we can enjoy our spare time. Even our school buildings are built using minerals, where we use it for our learning, which includes the learning of minerals.

And most of these materials are minerals obtained by mining underground. But I had always wondered how we got these materials because all the rocks I find are all gray. It turns out the minerals we use are accumulated into ore deposits. I learned that the minerals used in our everyday items now were once part of the earth, which is then shifted around by plate tectonics. Plate tectonics causes volcanoes to form which melts the minerals causing some of them to crystalize and form deposits which we then harvent for our everyday use. It is interesting to think about how all of the things we use today used to be a pile of rocks, melted and became raw materials.

Rocks are natural aggregates made up of two or more minerals. While minerals on the other hand have distinct chemical and physical properties that set them apart from other rocks. The general differences of the two are their chemical and elemental compositions, the physical structures, the atomic structures, and their traits. 

We have learned of the 3 main classifications of rocks, namely igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The different physical properties of a mineral like luster, hardness, color and streak, crystal form and habit, cleavage and fracture, and specific gravity. There were also discussions like minerals in society and ore minerals that helped us to get a better grasp of the facts that we needed to know regarding the two.

In conclusion, the majority of the first quarter was made up of lessons regarding these rocks and minerals. And doing the projects, the PETAs, the activities, the tasks, and most specially listening to the discussions really truly helped us to learn more about rocks and minerals.

Well, rocks are made up of minerals, and they could be used for a variety of things, namely construction. There are three types of them, which are igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary, all encircling a cycle that transitions them from one rock to another, or from pieces of aggregates to a full, solid rock.

Minerals, however, are non-living solid materials that form naturally and have a crystalline structure, as well as a definite chemical composition. They could be used for jewelry and more. I learned about the many physical properties of minerals, such as their luster, hardness, color, cleavage, fracture, and many, many more.

All of these lessons and learnings are more than important as they give us a hint of what our lives are about, what we are surrounded by, and the wonders that come with mother nature. This also proves that now, more than ever, we must take action and do things that care for these things.

This module also taught me about how important and beneficial minerals are in our society. Minerals are present everywhere nowadays even in our home. Just like in the salt we are using to make our food flavorful, in the walls of the tall concrete buildings, stainless steel utensils, gadgets, doorknobs, glass and many more. No wonder that minerals play an important role in our everyday lives, but we must also consider the fact that producing these can cause harmful effects on our environment just like the process of mining and leaching. It can cause destruction of geologic land forms like mountains or it can also pollute bodies of water like rivers and streams. To make my message short, we should produce minerals in a way that we can also protect our environment. Let's not abuse our natural resources, rather conserve it not just for us humans but also for the habitat of many organisms.

Petroleum-based products wouldn't exist. What kind of place would the planet be without minerals and rocks? Without them, life as we know it would not exist. How do they differ?
Minerals are naturally occurring substances with distinctive chemical and physical properties, composition and atomic structure. On the other hand, rocks are made up of 2 or more minerals that were mixed up through different geological processes.

How did I compare them to cells?
Cells, as we all know them, are the building blocks of life. The thought goes the same with rocks and minerals. Almost all the equipments and products we use are composed of them. From the cosmetics we apply on our face to the glass we use to apply those cosmetics on or to look out on the window. 

We live in a society where rocks and minerals are abundant. They help us in many different ways. Take note, they might be helpful, but they're still limited. We must conserve and use our resources properly.

You know, there are many different types of rocks.
There are three distinct categories.
They are metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous.

2. Minerals make up rocks.
There are so many distinct types of rocks because they all contain different minerals.

3. The source of igneous rock is molten magma.
The extremely hot material found in volcanoes is molten magma!
When the magma cools, it transforms into rock. Depending on whether the magma cooled below the Earth's surface or on its surface, there are two main forms of igneous rock. If it has cooled from below, it is plutonic rock, and if it has cooled from above, it is volcanic rock.
Several igneous rock types include slate and pumice.

4. Rock made by sediment is fairly prevalent. Sand, dirt, and small stones are used to create its layers.  As additional layers are added on top, the bottom layers become more condensed over time. 
Chalk, sandstone, shale, and limestone are all examples of sedimentary rock types.

5. Rock that has undergone metamorphosis has experienced intense pressure and heat.
Rocks that have been subjected to a lot of pressure and heat are the source of metamorphic rock.
The Earth's movements can produce pressure and heat. 
After all, it is constantly moving!
Slate and marble are two examples of metamorphic rocks.
Metallized Rocks Intense heat and/or pressure from within caused the igneous or sedimentary rocks that now make up metamorphic rocks to transform. 
The extreme heat and/or pressure present in the Earth's crust caused metamorphic rocks, which were formerly igneous or sedimentary rocks, to transform. 

They have a crystalline texture that is frequently "squashed" (foliated or banded).

Rocks are the subject of geology, and geologists are those who study them.
They research the earth's geological history as well as the minerals that each rock contains.

7. Earth receives space debris!
Although space pebbles occasionally fall to Earth, they usually end up in the ocean. Meteorites are the name for these rocks.
When you witness a shooting star, a piece of space rock is actually entering the atmosphere. Whenever a shooting star appears, a piece of space rock is actually entering the atmosphere.

Ores are the name for some rocks.
Ores are rocks that contain precious metals like silver and gold.

The lessons deepened my understanding about the Earth as it explored interesting subjects such as the different types of rocks; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic and their formation which is summarized and visualized in the rocks cycle. Through these lessons, I’ve come to realize that rocks are not just rocks, they have a built presence and importance in the surface of the Earth and behind those rocks is a process — a story — of their formation and their history of long ago.

Minerals were also further explored, especially the different types of the mineral resources and how they can be formed or where they can be accumulated. I was introduced to the tectonic setting which made the understanding easier for me as it visualized the geological process that occurs due to plate tectonics and how these movements result in the formation of different kinds of minerals in varying environments. Minerals have become such integral parts of human society due to how minerals are used and integrated in the everyday things we use.

Overall, my main takeaways about my learning are that minerals and rocks are important as they play an important role in the formation of human society and how they predate our own.

What Lesson 2 truly taught me was that the materials we utilized every day were composed of minerals; we were just unaware of them. Just like our glittering galaxy stars above us, minerals, though the smallest of all the stars,  is also our source of life scattered underneath us.

Further, the Earth is divided into four distinct systems, or spheres. The geosphere is the first sphere and is composed of the solid rock that makes up the interior and exterior of the planet. The second system consists of the small portion of Earth that can sustain life, often referred to as the biosphere. The third system contains the hydrosphere, which consists of the regions of Earth covered by vast quantities of water. The fourth system is the atmosphere, which acts as a blanket to keep the planet warm, as well as a source of oxygen for life and carbon dioxide for plant growth. These five enormous and intricate systems all work together to keep Earth habitable.

From makeup powder that contains iron, mica, and zinc, to kitchen utensils that are made up of iron and chromium. Most of what we use is composed of a wide range of minerals. Learning about the properties and characteristics of minerals was also fascinating. Further understanding how they form was a mind-blowing experience. There are so many factors in the formation of these minerals and most of them are concentrated in a manner that is not very economical meaning there is so little amount embedded in an ore. Thankfully, we have naturally occurring geological processes that can concentrate the minerals and rocks in a particular area. For this reason, we have 5 types of ore deposits classified by the factors that govern their accumulation as well as their precipitation. With all of this in mind, I realized that when we use daily objects, the materials that were used to produce that objects were carefully extracted and produced. It is truly fascinating how human technology has come so far that we don't even really notice the convenience it provides us until it's gone. We should be more mindful of the objects we use as minerals, whether rare or not, are truly valuable.

Anyways, let's talk about rocks and minerals!!!

Rocks are solid collection of minerals, and we all know that these can be made from natural traces, like decayed plants and animal, and also can be man-made. While this mineral is only a naturally occurring substance with distinctive chemical and physical properties, composition and atomic structure.

Typically, two or more minerals combined together through geological processes make up rocks. For instance, granite is an igneous rock mostly composed of interlocking crystals of the minerals quartz, feldspar, and mica; sandstone is a sedimentary rock that may also contain same minerals, but in the form of grains that have been compacted and cemented together.

The term "economic mineral" has a broader definition. By quarrying, mining, and pumping, economic minerals are removed from the Earth and employed in a variety of industries like construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and energy production.

Well, these rocks and minerals can be renewable (can be accumulated in a short period of time) and non-renewable (can be accumulated in thousands, millions, and billions of years).

But the formation of those matters could really take some time, and we can’t do anything about it especially minerals, since we are not responsible for its formation- minerals are not made by people. Rocks, also undergo a cycle and can be classified on how they are formed; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. 

Cell phones, laptops, television, furniture, other pieces of equipment, and even our own houses wouldn’t be formed without the help of minerals. There are multiple individual mineral contents in everything that we use, and although we can’t really name them all individually, we can’t deny their impact on our lives.

All of these properties are the things that help you in using the mineral decision tree. 

 

Rocks are solid aggregate of minerals and sometimes it has nonmineral solid components. The 3 main classifications of rocks are igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The way they form is explained in the rock cycle. The rock cycle is a helpful diagram about how different rocks are formed. 

In conclusion every time I hear the lyrics “shine bright like a diamond” all the learnings from this topic comes to mind. So to everyone reflect bright like a diamond.

Are ores important? valuable? or are they harmful? Ores are minerals that have an extracted value upon it, as stated by the module itself. Base from the given definition of ores, the word "value", implicates that money or any form of capital is involved with ore. Extraction of minerals or ore generates capital in which, could result in helping the society itself grew budget and funds.

It may be helpful with the society with generated value however, some say that obtaining the ore itself is harmful. As stated by the website

The very food we eat need minerals to be in the best state for consumption, they need minerals to be able to carry out functions to maintain a healthy state. 

Rocks and minerals provide us with so many useful things. Not to mention, its not only humans who benefit from the existence of rocks and minerals. Animals and plants also benefit greatly. Whether it be to provide them with a habitat, or act as nourishment, minerals play a role in nature and its entirety. 

We should be more grateful of what we have thanks to minerals. Human society has greatly evolved due to the presence and consumption of these precious stones, so at the very least we should acknowledge their importance to our life and not take them for granted.

I also learned that minerals can be classified into two types: metallic and non-metallic. I was very astonished at how minerals vary and how we encounter tons of minerals in our household, even if we may not know it.
 
Overall, I learned how important rocks and minerals are. I was also fascinated by how both of these help us in ways we can’t sometimes imagine.

They may differ in value, but both contribute to the extraction and production of valuable minerals, whether metallic or nonmetallic. They can concentrate minerals and elements in rocks of a specific area using geological processes. One example is the rock cycle, which, despite the fact that rocks contain two or more minerals and are not completely pure, plays an important role in the accumulation and concentration of valuable elements.

In the long run, both are beneficial and may be used in our daily lives, but it takes time and several processes to obtain these minerals and elements that we use on a daily basis.
