The "fiend from hell" that arrives in Janie's ear is definitely doubt, which was caused by her bad relationships with men up until this point in life. Janie has never been genuinely "loved" or treated equally by any man before, especially Logan and Joe. Janie, according to the text, really likes Tea Cake, who's actions show that he really cares about Janie, and wants her more than just for show. However, Janie is still skeptical of Tea Cake because of her first marriage, where Logan "talked to her in rhymes" and then stopped and made her do the work. One prime example in the text says, "She adored him and hated him at the same time. The fiend from hell is doubt. Janie has doubts about another man in her life especially after everyone close to her has betrayed her. She doesn't want to make another life changing mistake and run off with the wrong guy yet again. Last time it cost her 17 long, miserable years of her life. She really likes Teacake. He treats her equally. She also very much enjoys "his good points" (96) including but not limited to his "lean, over-padded shoulders" (96) and his "narrow waist" (96). But, here comes old Tea Cake, the man of mystery. Janie has a love hate relationship with him it seems. She hates him because its as if another man may come sweep her off her feet, talk in rhymes so to speak, and steal another 17 years of her life from her. But altogether he has impressed her, she has been taken by his charisma and his thoughts on gender equality. I think that Janie is trying to stop herself from falling in love with Janie but theres nothing she can do about it.
