Try not to write too much on their writing. At the end, note something they did well and (if relevant) 2-3 things to improve which relate to skills we have learned in class.

I for one rather focus on one type of error at a time in order for students to put understand their mistake and learn better for next time. In addition, always leave positive feedback even if the writing is not perfect.

Point out the relevant issues - whether positive or negative - the ones pertaining the point of focus. Be clear about what you expect from the writing task before you assign it, and follow it through in the feedback stage. If there are many errors, try to highlight the most significant ones, and the ones that are repetitive. Once those are fixed, the student can be receptive of more feedback. We can be transparent about it and say that we are going to work step by step, and we are going to start with 1, 2, 3. It's important to also see the positive aspects - we can relate to the content, the organization, etc.

It is important to start The feedback with positive things and then focus on 2-3 things that need to be improved. Always finish the feedback with a positive encouragement.
