Is it better to have a couple great friendships or many good ones? A lot of people around me seem to err on the side of having a lot of friends. You end up looking cooler in the hallways; after all, what’s better than having that girl you like see you talking to a big crowd of people? But I tend to focus on fostering fantastic friendships. Perhaps too few. In my mind, I have no better example than my bestest, most dearest friend, Connor Yoon.

We’ve been friends for all four years of high school, but for the last two I’ve been surprised, impressed, and even a little jealous about how he’s been able to focus on one thing and yield such professional results. I wish I could’ve done the same, but whether I spread my time too thin or just don’t have the personality traits necessary to entirely devote yourself like he did, I’ve never been able to match his drive. Especially when it comes to trombone.

While we started at around the same skill level, in his time at GBS he’s progressed into a very talented trombone player. Talented enough that he wants to devote the rest of his life to being a music teacher. I spoke to him about essentially his last hurrah in high school, a worthy culmination of his musical career. I also asked about his motivations; why he ended up putting so much time and effort into trombone playing.

Whether it’s a realistic goal or not, I feel like with the extra autonomy that (is supposed to) come(s) with college, I have the opportunity to do as he did. I want to best equip myself for that situation, if it does end up coming to fruition. While I don’t want to study music in college like Connor, it’s still a gigantic part of my life and I would be lost if I didn’t continue.

However, I consider myself a “party musician.” I have the natural talent of being able to hear something on the radio and play it, which I learned quickly--from quizzical looks and utter astonishment--that it’s not something a lot of people can do. But people like Connor, by actually practicing their craft, have caught up to and far surpassed me even in that area of music. Perhaps with my first private teacher, I hope to take that next step as well.
