The Color Purple picks up with Celie telling what happened to Sofia from Sofia's point of view. Previous to this Sofia was put in jail for starting a fight with the mayor because the mayor had slapped her. Sofia was beat, put in prison, then forced to work as a servant for the mayor and his wife. Sofia says that the Mayor's family is backwards she tells a story saying," The Mayor bought a car for his wife but never taught her how to drive it." So Miss Millie asked Sofia if she could teach her how to drive. Sofia teaches her how to drive then Miss Millie tells her to pack her bags and she would take her to go see her children. It has been 5 years since she has seen her children and she only got to spend 15 minutes with them. The story then comes back to Celie, she gets a letter from Shug saying she has a big surprise for them. Which turns out to be her new husband Grady. Neither Mr.___ or Celie are too happy about the announcement but they get used to him. Celie then opens up to Shug about her life and her sister Nettie. They talk more about Nettie then Shug finds out Mr.___ has been hiding letters. The letters come from Nettie meant for Celie but they never reach her because of him. They get a hold of the letters and read them. The letters talk about why Nettie was kicked out then who she lives with now then she says that she will move to Africa with missionaries to help the poor people of Africa.
