Throughout the 19th century, the area where Ang Mo Kio is today was largely uninhabited, due to the forest reserve there. People only started settling there, due to the rubber boom. The significance behind the naming of Ang Mo Kio was that, as the Literal translation of Ang Mo Kio in Hokkien was "Bridge of the Caucasian", this referred to the John Turnbull's bridge that crossed the Kallang River.
