Immigration by Tommy Garuccio

I have decided to choose immigration as my topic because it is a relevant political issue in our society today. Recent government actions have created two sides whether amnesty should be granted or deportation should take place. I want to argue a side of the people in our society today

In recent executive action performed by President Obama, he has allowed a temporary relief of deportation allowing millions of undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States. In this article, it outlines the very basics of the executive actions. It tells us the number of deportations taking place yearly, the people who qualify for staying in the country, plans for the youth under 30 years old, and the potential to receive work permits. It tells us what the action does, and what it does not. Nearly half of our illegal immigrants come from Mexico, but the other half is largely compromised of people from Latin America countries and Asia

Who: President Obama

What: Details the action of Obama's immigration executive order

When: November 20th, 2014

Where: United States

Why: This matters because we have millions of people who are living illegally in our country. Some of these people are criminals, but some of them are families. Our broken immigration policy must be fixed for the well-being of the United States of America.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/09/us/judge-refuses-to-allow-obamas-immigration-actions-to-proceed.html?_r=0

This article took place before Obama's executive action was put through, but it does show some positives. In the article, it tells us that this will grant a temporary relief to the families who are living illegally. That will surely be a weight off of their shoulder. Also, economically, it will allow the illegal immigrants to continue contributing to our growing economy. But, after reading this article, I see that this was a political play by president Obama. This will most likely promote voting from hispanics for a democratic president in 2016. This article was clearly written by a liberal as it speaks nothing negative of the executive action and labels those against it the "rights.'

http://www.usnews.com/opinion/economic-intelligence/2014/11/20/obamas-immigration-executive-order-is-good-policy-and-politics

This article talks how Obama will not be giving health coverage to the illegal immigrants. This can be looked at as both positive and negative, but for the sake of our economy, this was a smart play by president Obama. Republicans were getting on to Obama about potentially providing medicaid, but that notion is now out the window as the EO (executive order) has now been put through. More than a political play, it will save the United States millions of dollars.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/20/us/politics/obamacare-unlikely-for-undocumented-immigrants.html?_r=0

who: GEYSAR I. GURBANOV

what: This article comes from an immigrant who applied for legal immigration himself stating his claim on the negatives of allowing illegals to remain in the country.

where: United States

When: Nov 19, 2014

Why: This shows the ideas behind the people who have gained citizenship legally. He expresses his disgust and how he feels its unfair.

This article shows a con not commonly thought of, that is how the people working for the government processing applications of citizenship are already far behind. By allowing these people to stay it adds to the job of these people far more. Yes, this article has a bias. It comes from a person who has gained citizenship the hard way, the right way. He is angered because after years of struggling with paperwork, he sees millions granted relief, while he himself struggled greatly. A fair point and bias in my eyes. Kinda like seeing someone get an A on a test they cheated on, you feel me??

http://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/op-ed/article10137332.html

This is related to my topic because at the base of my project it all comes back to people crossing a boundary that they are not legally allowed inside. Obama has chosen to sympathize with the border crossers and is allowing them to stay.

“Lady and gentleman, when my parents left Korea with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the considerable wealth they had amassed in the shipping business, they had a dream. They had a dream that one day amid the snowy hilltops of western North Carolina, their son would lose his virginity to a cheerleader in the woman's bathroom of a Waffle House just off the interstate. My parents have sacrificed so much for this dream! And that is why we must journey on, despite all trials and tribulations! Not for me and least of all for the poor cheerleader in question, but for my parents and indeed for all immigrants who came to his great nation in what they themselves could never have: CHEERLEADER SEX.”
― John Green, Let It Snow

Honestly, I couldn't not use this. I'm sorry for the immaturity, but that was one of the funniest things I've read in some time. But, the meaning behind it is a little more profound than "cheerleader sex." The truth of the matter is that families come to this country seeking a better life for their future kids or the kids that they already have. It is perfectly relatable toward the subject in the sense that it supports the idea of illegal immigration because it creates a better life for their children. After all, most parents want to see their children have a better chance of success than they were granted. Many of these adults were born into poverty. They came to the United States for unselfish reasons. While I don't support it, you have to look at all perspectives in order to draft a good argument.

I agree that america is an amazing country, but if immigrants were going to the come to the country anyways why would them coming illegally be an issue. The only thing legalizing them would just take an longer amount of time and would have the same results. Also, if there are immigrants already over here why send them back and not just try to legalize them while their here. If you really do feel that America is an amazing place wouldn't you want others to experience that feeling.

I agree with the points you brought when discussing it. Like it or not, America IS a shining beacon in the darkened world that we live in. I believe that we need to actually start living up to that reputation. People come to US because they have hope and dreams for a better life. Is it OUR choice to take that from them?

I believe that there is really no stopping immigration without completely closing the US's borders. We would have to TOTALLY close our borders to EVERYTHING, because, like it or not, we are a symbol to the less fortunate. I do not think we should do this. In doing so, what does that make us? In my opinion, there is no grey area in immigration, it is one of the few absolutes we are forced to decide between.
