The last event I watched online and was the Kave 360 talk by Steve Partridge. In the talk he explains his Kave company which provides 360 immersive venues which can be used for an array of purposes. I chose to watch this talk as I liked how innovative the idea of a 360 degree space is.

The Beginning

To begin with Steve Partridge was specialising in filming live music using 360 degree cameras and spatial audio. This experience catalysed his move into 360 degree immersive venues. Another important reason for Steve Partridge's move into venues was his research into innovative technologies like VR. Steve Partridge saw fundamental issues with VR being that they strain your eyes, the headset often ends up uncomfortable and the nature of the experience is quite isolated. These are issues that Steve Partridge saw could be fixed in a 360 immersive venue.

Commercial vs Purpose

To begin with Steve Partridge realised there was a lot of commercial opportunity with the Kave venues. There were opportunities fro gaming experience, cinema, live music, theatre or sport. Furthermore, you could ticket these experience and also provide catering for them leaving a big opportunity for profit. However, Steve Partridge also realised that by providing a visceral, interactive and engaging experience for people you could possibly inspire change. He explored ideas around providing an experience that could raise awareness for climate change with experts from Exeter University. Another example of Kave having a better purpose commercial is where research done by Newcastle University found that the immersive environment could have strong benefits for primary school children with autism. The research was so strong that the NHS decided to fund it.

The Balance of Commercial and Purpose

To achieve the right balance between for commercial and purpose Steve Partridge created a rule that from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday the time would be used for purposeful events and activities while the weekend and evenings would be used in a commercial capacity. This is particularly important with Steve Partridges vision for Kave in Cornwall. Partidge points out that the vast majority of business in Cornwall occurs in the summer. This means that for the vast majority of the year businesses struggle. Partridge points out that by having a Kave venue in Cornwall opportunities could be presented to catering companies during the quieter times of the year allowing Kave to benefit the community.

To conclude I learnt it is important to keep up with new innovative technology and how they are being used. Given how quickly technology is developing there are lots of opportunities out there to create something new. Furthermore, I learnt that it is important to try and give back with your new technologies by striking a balance between commercial and purpose.
