The individual wants to belong to a society and fit in. Two identities are involved in this stage: sexual and occupational. During this process, they begin to form their own identity, based upon the outcome of their explorations. Identity crisis is also common in this stage.

The peer groups in the child's life will become more important and can affect the child's self-esteem either positively or negatively. The child will also begin to want approval from adults. If not getting approval then the child may begin to doubt his/hers abilities to reach a goal. Being to demanding of a child when they cant gain a certain skill can cause then to become inferior.

Trust Vs. Mistrust

0-1.5

Erikson’s first psychosocial crisis happens during the first year or your life which is Trust vs. Mistrust. When we are born we have no idea how to live in the world. We rely on our caregivers. Who teach us the ways of life and care for us. If the child recognizes routine and reliable care their trust will grow which will lead to the feeling of safety even when feeling threatened. When the fear of crisis is upcoming the hope for the child is that the parent will be a source of support. If they fail to do that it will lead them to fear and or mistrust. With other people around them it can lead to anxiety, insecurities and loss of confidence in the world around them or their abilities of events. “Consistent with Erikson's views on the importance of trust, research by Bowlby and Ainsworth has outlined how the quality of the early experience of attachment can affect

relationships with others in later life.” --Erikson’s (1959) theory of psychosocial development.

Body Theory- Personal identity persists over time, cause you remain in the same body from birth to death. However you are not the same person from when you were born to when you grow up. Your skin for example, Your outer layer of skin changes hundreds of times. Your red blood cells change every so often, even your skeleton changes. You are constantly being replaced by new physical versions of yourself. What makes you, you isn't just your appearance, its the stuff we can’t see too. Our conscious.

They say that if you can remember a memory from a long time ago when you were a kid then you maintain memory link to that person. If Personal identity requires memory then none of us became who we are until our first memory. Which means we lost our first couple years. How do we know that our memories are correct?
