This photo shows how one particular faith/cultural community in Calgary is safe enough to not only have a community center, but also welcome others to join them in a very public manner. It sits on the side of a major roadway in Southland. But the JCC is just one example of a faith/cultural community - there are so many others that are part of Calgary and across Canada!

Why did you take a picture of this?

This ability for someone to be acknowledged and feel safe to practice their religion and culture is key to the health of one’s identity – both as an individual, and as a community. For many, faith is closely tied to culture, and therefor to identity. The freedom to safely practice one’s faith and culture is integral to someone’s health and wellness. I took this picture because I felt it could be a good springboard into a discussion with students about the many faith/cultural identities that are part of Canada’s diverse cultural landscape, and how important such inclusion is to our national identity.

As someone with Jewish ancestry, knowing the JCC is a visible and active presence (along with many synagogues) in Calgary tells me that this part of my identity is – for the most part – supported and safe here. But I also know that there are many whose identities are not so supported, and who do not see their identities reflected in my community. Worse, there are those whose identities are unwelcome, or even attacked – despite Canadian laws around freedom of religion and culture.

How can this photograph provide opportunities for us to expand our notion of what citizenship/identity is now?

I would invite a discussion with my students to examine one of the core values and attitudes as laid out in the front matter of the Program of Studies – specifically, teaching students to “value the diversity, respect the dignity, and support the equality of all human beings.” (Alberta Education, 2005: Program Rationale and Philosophy, Social Studies K-12, p. 2.). What does a sign like this mean about our community? I would invite them to consider what kinds of community actions and institutions help to support someone’s individual and community identity – as well as what things hinder them. This exploration would seek to help students understand the relationship between individual identity and community support, and foster understanding about how they as citizens can participate in creating a positive social force for diversity and pluralism.
