Southern cities changed because machines replaced hand labor. There were plantations (especially cotton plantations) where the wealthy kept slaves that did all the work in the plantations. Since African Americans were treated as slaves, many would try to escape to the North and there were violent uprisings against slavery. Many Southern whites believed slavery was acceptable, though, and in response to rebellions, such as Nat Turner's rebellion, the North fought back and started forcing even free blacks to become slaves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRlfMhP_CMI

Transportation became faster and easier. Steamboats changed transportation for the better. Robert Fulton designed and launched steamboat in the Spring of 1803, but it broke apart and sank. Fulton worked on the Clermont, and it was a success. It made its first voyage along the Hudson river on August 17, 1807. The railroad was also an amazing form of transportation. The first railroad was the Ohio and Baltimore railroad.

http://slideplayer.com/4065299/13/images/7/Transportation+north+south+Roads+Ships+%26+Canals+Railroad+River.jpg

North and South Comparison

The North relied on industry and the South relied on agriculture, meaning inventions in the South, such as the cotton gin, helped Southern agriculture while inventions in the North helped industry. Transportation in the North was more important because it affected trade of manufactured goods which were greatly produced in factories. However, transportation got better in the South as well because many railroads were built, some used for slaves to escape to the North. Population in the South increased because of the increase of the amount of slaves, whereas the population in the North increased for a different reason. It increased because of the amount of immigrants looking for jobs in factories in the North. Cities in the North grew large and polluted from the many working factories while cities in the South were full of plantations kept by wealthy in which many slaves worked for cotton production. The economy in the South and North increased. As slavery increased, cotton production and profit increased in the South. As mass production in factories increased in the North, a middle class formed and many people got wealthier. Clothing also got cheaper. The North and the South both changed a lot during the 1840s, but they still had many similarities.

http://slideplayer.com/slide/6897601/

http://images.slideplayer.com/26/8709419/slides/slide_3.jpg
