Chapter three started out with a very long and endlessly detailed description of the imagery in and around the church during the funeral. Jacks funeral is described mostly by the droves of pity filled people and even more the feelings of contempt that Lou feels towards their feelings. She feels that they should not be grieving since they did not loose a father she did. She feels that they will never truly understand. We also learn of the condition of Amanda which seems to be living but in a continual coma. Lou over hears two men speaking about the estate of Jack Cardinal and how they are in charge of it. They must also do something with the children due to Amanda's state. Lou convinces them to send the family to Virginia to live with their great grandmother Lousia mae.

His stories are amazing and he gets recognized for them but because his job is writing, he does not get paid very much at all 1:3. He wants to move out to California so he can write for tv shows and movies 2:8. That way he will be able to afford the life he wants for his family. He wants to be well known for his writing and also get paid much more money than he is originally.

Lou obviously does not have the best relationship with her mother. It is not because her mother is an inadequate parent, it is more like she favors and respects her father more than her mother. In chapter one it says,"Lou would always see herself as Jack Cardinal's daughter." 1:4 But Lou does have some underlying compassion for her mother because she is the one who has cared after her in the end. This is characterized when she believes that her mother could have moved as a sign of her recovering from her state of coma. "When she started to utter mom" 4:29

They get in a car accident and Jack dies and the mood turns to sadness because of his death 2:15. The funeral makes the mood sad and Lou is angry and is blaming it on her mother for the accident 3:18.

At first, she was not very impressed of Dickens, Virginia. She had expected it to be all farmers, hunters, and coal miners but the town was surprisingly similar to New York which was very puzzling for Lou. There were general stores, restaurants, automobile dealerships, and typical gas stations. She then realized that the way her father had explained the town was the way it had been twenty years ago. Even though this city was semi modern it wasn't much compared to the big city. New York city had big carnivals and fairs. They had clubs and many theaters. New York City was a very social and extremely busy city. There were many houses or apartments right on top of each other and many people owned cars.

African Americans would work in low paying jobs that other white people would not want to do like street cleaners or garbage collectors. Over all we percieve that the house not only is very old but it is authentic, hand made, possibly a little shabby and makeshift with all its ad-on's. We are given the description over all of the location being rural but homey at the same time.

Milk is known as a perfect medium for the growth of bacteria and pathogens. Louisa Mae's process of "pasteurization" is would not prove effective at all. In order for the process to successfully prevent the growth of pathogens after heating the food must be vacuum sealed immediately after the heating process. Louisa Mae's process if anything promotes the growth of bacteria by creating a warm moist enviornment where harmful pathogens can thrive.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was an American poet who was from Portland Maine In the 1800's. One of his most famous poems was Paul Reverie's Ride. I think that Baldacci decided to tie Longfellow into the story because he is an American poet. With Jack Cardinal being a writer the characters can easily connect with Longfellow. Knowing that cotton is related to Longfellow reminds Lou of her father. Knowing that Cotton is related to Longfellow also gives us a little more background into the life and intentions of him.

He talks about moving to California to write for moves and television shows but I don't like that idea. He shouldn't have people telling him what he needs to write. He just wants a bigger salary i guess. Always wanting to give me and the kids the life we "deserve" but truth be told, we are content with the one we have. He talks about you a lot. About the mountains and how you and them shaped him as a character. I can tell he misses it up there. Talks about it a lot especially to the kids. Oh Louisa you should see the kids and how they have grown! Lou is just like her father. Oz is so young but I know he will grow up to be a kind soul. Maybe one day I won't have to write about them but instead you can see them yourself

With Love,

Amanda Cardinal
