Boniel, Danielle Rose Xyndy D.

Q2 PETA in English

STORY WRITING

                                   Rhythms of Home

The 3 siblings moved back to the Philippines after living abroad. Juan the oldest child, Kate the middle child, and Mark the youngest. The three of them are excited and nervous about their new life. As they got out of their gate, their Aunt Kathy and their cousin Paul were already waiting for them with wild smiles. “Welcome home!” Aunt Kathy exclaimed, hugging each of them warmly. As they settled into the car, Paul excitedly said, “You guys came just in time! The Sinulog Festival is happening today.” Kate looked out the window, mesmerized by the colorful banners and the streets filled with people and vendors selling food and crafts in the side of the streets. “What’s the Sinulog Festival?” Mark asked curiously, Aunt Kathy smiled and replied “It’s a grand celebration with music, dancing, and parades. Trust me, you’re going to love it.” They arrived at their destination where the Sinulog Festival is held. They got out of their car and the siblings stood in the crowds. The energy of the festival reached its top with the start of the grand street dance competition. Performers moved in the perfect synchronization, their colorful costumes dazzling against the backdrop of the bustling streets. Suddenly dark clouds gathered overhead, and rain started pouring. “Will it stop?” Kate asked, worried, but Aunt Kathy smiled and said, “This is the spirit of Sinulog they won't stop for anything.” True enough, the dancers embraced the rain, their movements becoming even more mesmerizing, inspiring the crowd including the siblings to cheer and dance along with them. Whenthe rain finally stopped, the performers took their bows, and the crowd erupted into applause. Mark wiped the rain off his face, laughing as he said, “That was the best thing I’ve ever seen!” Kate and Juan nodded agreeing with Mark. “You’ll never forget about this,” Aunt Kathy said while all of them walked towards the car. Later that evening the family sat together, enjoying warm bowls of arroz caldo as the siblings recounted their day to their parents during a video call. “I think I finally understand why people love this place,” Kate said, her voice filled with wonder. “The Philippines isn’t just beautiful, it's alive,” Juan added with a smile. Aunt Kathy watched them proudly, knowing they had taken their first step in reconnecting with their heritage.
