Mesopotamia was an ancient region located in the Middle East. It had various city-states each with its own unique culture and contributions to civilization. In Mesopotamia, superior kings were crucial signs of civilizations for several reasons as they played a key role in unifying various city-states and establishing control. An example would be King Hammurabi, who created the Hammurabi code. This code helped establish justice and order, which are important things to consider when it comes to the upbringing of a civilized society.

Greek city-states known as “poleis”, were fundamental to the structure of ancient Greek civilization. Art and politics were major signs of civilization in Greek city-states, reflecting their advanced societal structures and cultural achievements. An example of their architecture would be their temples. These structures served religious and social purposes and demonstrated their great engineering skills. Sculpture is also a very well-known art form among the Greeks. Greek sculpture evolved from rigid forms to a more naturalistic representation of the human body. Politically, Greece was quite unique compared to other ancient civilizations. Unlike other ancient cities that often had monarchies, Athens developed a direct democracy where citizens had the right to participate directly in the decision-making process. This was a significant difference from the more centralized and autocratic systems seen in places like Mesopotamia.
