AM and PM divide our 24 hour day into two. The day starts at 12:00 am and ends at 11:59 pm. The afternoon starts at 12:00 pm. When you show up at school in the morning, it is still in the AM part of the day, but when you are going home it's. PM. AM and PM are important because they help us tell the difference between 7:00 in the morning and 7:00 in the evening. At 7:00 am, you are waking up and getting ready for school. At 7:00 pm, you have had dinner and are getting ready for bed.

An hour can be split up into four 15 minute segments. These 15-minute segments are sometimes referred to as "a quarter" when talking about time. For instance, a quarter til 2 would be 1:45. A quarter past 6 would be 6:15. Another common phrase is half-past. A half past 10 is 10:30.
