Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable. (1)

This quote is important because it is the first page of the book. It tells us who the main character is and a brief summary of who is he.

What is the problem or conflict of your book? Which characters are involved? How do you think the problem or conflict might be solved?

The conflict or problem in my book is Dr.Jekyll’s inner battle with himself. For example,“Even as good shone upon the countenance of the one, evil was written broadly and plainly on the face of the other”(p.25). This means that Dr.Jekyll is trying to hide his dark side but feels as if evil will always find a way to reveal itself. Other characters in the story like Mr.Utterson, who is a “cold and scanty”(1) lawyer who is close friends with Dr.Jekyll. Mr.Utterson’s friend, Enfield tells him a story about this dark spirit man named Mr.Hyde who assaulted a young girl. This leads Mr.Utterson and Dr.Jekyll on manhunt to find Mr.Hyde. I think this conflict will be solved by Mr.Utterson and Dr.Jekyll finding Mr.hyde.
