During my student teaching, one of my classroom management techniques was to have the students quiet down by holding each other accountable and not with me verbally telling them. I would place one finger on my lips and raise my other hand. The students that were paying attention would catch on and do the same. Now the accountability aspect of this strategy starts when the students who have their hand up tap their partner who is talking and quietly tells them to quiet down.
